Choosing CIDESCO

One of 8 CIDESCO Certified Schools in the U.S.

Like many other future estheticians, I want to own my own business some day. When the day comes for me to open the doors of my spa, I want to know the ins and outs of every service I offer and be able to provide support for my employees in every aspect of their own practices.

I knew AVEDA would provide me with an excellent education, especially in a beauty-savvy city like San Francisco; and my research into Cinta AVEDA revealed an exciting and different educational option: CIDESCO, short for Comité Internacional D’Esthétique et de Cosmétologie.

CIDESCO is an internationally recognized certification in beauty therapy. This program is essentially a continuation of the Esthiology program where you can learn advanced versions of all the subject matter covered in Esthiology, plus much more.

You will likely start with a 10-week massage course taught by educator Christy. With 15+ years of experience in massage and skin care, she can teach you almost anything you want to know about massage, including special modalities like pre-natal technique and Thai massage.

Educator Kris covers machines like the galvanic, which uses electrical current to penetrate beneficial products further into the skin and the high frequency, which creates ozone gas on the skin’s surface to help manage the overgrowth of p. bacteria, which is a contributing factor to acne.

Maria can round out your CIDESCO education by divulging her make-up success tips, in-depth product knowledge and more, all collected over more than 30 years in the industry.

Any esthetician can benefit from the advanced topics that are covered in this specialized program, but if you’re thinking about following an entrepreneurial route, it’s practically a must.

Eyelash Extensions – All The Rage

I am almost done with my Esthi program (13 days to be exact, but who’s counting)! One of my goals and reasons in obtaining my Esthetics license is so I can offer eyelash extensions services.

I’ve watched this service being done on others as well as receiving it on my lashes. It just seemed like a very intimidating process to learn. I’ve asked several eyelash technicians how long it took them to get use to using both their hands to painstakingly place each individual extension on one lash at a time. The consensus scared me even more. Since my second salon, Organic Shimmer, will be opening in a few months I figured I better start practicing now.

I first started with a mannequin head and strip lashes. Trying to place lash extensions on strip lashes were a very bad idea. It was so difficult, I waited another few weeks before I tried again. I watched more videos on how to perform the service, and this time decided to try it on a live model. I asked one of my classmates if she would let me try on her, and lo and behold she agreed. I was able to place about 5 lash extensions per eye in about an hour. Then another classmate agreed to let me try on her as well, I was able to place about 10 lash on each eye on her within an hour.
The next day I was able to gather a few more potential models and I have now done about 13 live models, in about an hour I am now able to do a full set, depending on their lashes. Word started to spread that there is an Esthi student performing lash extensions and I started getting requests at Cinta Aveda! I am pretty surprised that after about a dozen models almost back to back, I have gotten the hang of lash extensions quite quickly.
The next thing for me to do is to research lash companies, characteristics of various eye shapes and lashes, and home care of the extensions. I want to be able to provide the best and most detailed eyelash extension knowledge to all my clients and be able to train my employees to do the same. The only problem that I am having now is…..I wish someone can do my eyelash extensions!!
Sincerely,
Christina Lee

My Experience at Cinta Aveda

Working on a guest at the Student Salon!

My experience at Cinta Aveda Institute has been an amazing journey. I chose Cinta Aveda because it had been recommended by friends and other stylists in the city as one of the best beauty schools in the city. I am thrilled because indeed I received an excellent education. I do not have a single complaint. The people working at Cinta Aveda are very friendly and helpful which creates a great learning environment.

Learning about makeup with Stephanie

As students, we are lucky to have such talented educators. One of my favorite educators is my beta instructor Stephanie. She is a wonderful mentor and a very inspiring talented stylist. Stephanie shared her experience and accomplishments in the beauty industry with her students which was very inspiring to me and my fellow students at the school.

Practice facial and finishing up work!

I also love the products that we work with. I had never used Aveda products before I attended the institute, but they are amazing. I fell in love with the products and now I only use Aveda hair and skin products myself.

In class

I really love the environment, where everyone treats each other with respect and in a professional manner. I am grateful that I chose Cinta Aveda not only because we have amazing educators but also because of the structure of the school. I think it’s really important to have a great educational structure.

Group of friends by the fire escape

When I first started beauty school I thought it would be like the movie Mean Girls but my experience here is totally different. I met great people who I see myself being friends with for a very long time and who I look forward to work with in the business. My classmates are wonderful and have grown to me like family.

A Fashion Show for Creative Team

Cinta Aveda really prepared their students to be the best of the best. Coming from Cinta Aveda we learned great cutting and coloring techniques. I am sure that everyone who graduates Cinta Aveda is going to be ready and prepared for the real world because of the high standards of the school. Another thing that I enjoyed about Cinta Aveda is being able to participate in Creative Team. I think it’s a great experience for all students to experience working in photo shoots and fashion shows and other creative aspects of the industry.

A class group photo!

I am very pleased that I chose Cinta Aveda and thankful that I met these great people this past year. I can’t wait to see everyone grow professionally and become successful.

The Journey

I have two weeks until graduation and I have learned far more than I thought I would. Starting in July I have been commuting to the city to enjoy a dose of knowledge regarding facials, salesmanship, cleanliness, waxing, makeup and so much more. I am one in a class of sixteen. I personally love the smaller class sizes. I feel the learning experience is a lot more personal and I feel I am noticed and not just lost in a sea of faces. Learning the steps of a facial was a broken up process that we put together piece by piece. It felt so good when I was able to do an entire facial all at once. And the learning certainly did not stop there. I found myself learning more and more as each day passed. I had never waxed anything ever in my life until I came here. I admit that I definitely was frustrated when I could not lay the wax just right. I reminded myself to have patience and that with continuous practice I would be able to do it. Now I want to wax everything! I am sure, though, that if I did I might end up in some sticky situations.

I am grateful for the student spa. I think it is a wonderful experience as it helps me prepare for when I have a job out there in the world. It has made me feel more confident in my abilities and I know that I will be able to perform the treatments to the best of my ability. Here at Aveda you have the opportunity to participate in Creative Teams. These teams go out to different places and do makeup for models for fashion shows, photo shoots, and so forth. What amazing experience! And not to mention I am sure it will look amazing on a resume. I am so glad that I have come to Aveda for my schooling. I have learned everything that has been offered and more by educators that have a real passion for the field and teaching. I truly feel that some life-long friends have been made here at my time with Cinta Aveda. I cannot wait to show the world what I am capable of.

Twice Charity Event: Laurent Gallery

Yesterday, on Sunday November 18th, there was a charity event by Twice at the Laurent Gallery in San Francisco. I had not heard too much about it, and was not sure what to expect. Twice is a secondhand fashion brand, where you can buy or sell designer clothes online. At the event you could bring clothes and sell them or swap with other people selling their clothes.

This was their first time holding an event and I was so happy to be a part of it. They had a DJ and a catering service as well. The founders of Twice previously worked at Google and discovered that there wasn’t a website where you can buy secondhand designer brands. I think it is a great idea because I always have clothes that are still new and not worn that just don’t fit anymore, or that I don’t wear.

They partnered with Cinta Aveda to do touch-ups with hair and makeup. I signed-up to help with the makeup and it was a great experience. All the people that came were so nice and were having a lot of fun.

There was also three other girls helping with makeup and 4 hair stylists. Some of the women that came in didn’t have time to do their makeup so they were thrilled that we were there. It was fun just to have everyone in the room have their makeup and hair done up.

The Experience Of Being A Student

November 10, 2012

The experience of being a student here, at the Cinta Aveda Institute, has been a great one. I’m always learning from our exceptional educators and getting hands-on help. Putting the education into hands-on learning makes learning and understanding skin care and product knowledge become second-nature. The professional environment mimics that of a real spa/salon. We even use the same computer/ booking system as many spas. This makes for an easy and stress-free transfer to a job at a spa. They prep us for the State Board test and we mock the practical part of the test as well so that we aren’t overwhelmed when we actually take the test. The percentage of Aveda students that pass the State Board test is 97% which shows how prepared we are for the test.

Student giving a Facial to a Client

The attitude around the school is always uplifting and positive. When you’re spending 600 hours in a place over the course of 6 months it makes coming to school something that you enjoy because of the great attitude the staff and educators have. They always smile and say ‘hi’ and remember you from your original beginning interview. I was so impressed by how friendly and knowledgeable Jocelyn and Katie as well as the other girls were on the first day I came in for interview, it had a lasting effect on me. When you enroll you get a free facial from a student currently at the Institute. The facial I received reinforced that my decision to enroll in the Esthiology program was a great one. The student was so friendly, welcoming, and made sure to explain to me the product line she was using. I was so impressed by her confidence in answering my questions and explaining the product line. Everyone is here is approachable and more than willing to help, always.

Au Natural: Tips For Rocking Your Natural Beauty

October 9, 2012
By

My friends joke that I always say, “Today was a total waste of make-up”!

Some days I wonder why I bother with makeup at all when it is so much easier to be a natural beauty. Foundation, concealer, eye shadow, liner, mascara, blush, it is a lot sometimes!

Here are some quick tips to help embellish your bare face:

  1. FLAWLESS SKIN IS VITAL: Healthy skin is beautiful skin! The first step is to have  a good skin care regimen. My favorite skin care is from Aveda.
  2. BE NATURAL FROM INSIDE OUT: I recently started juicing and noticed my hair, skin and nauls are on point! They say, you are what you eat! So, if you inhale junk food it is time to change your diet to enhance your natural beauty. Opt for fresh fruits and veggies rather than sweets and salty chips. Drink lots of water and skip the sugary soda. You don’t have to go as sever as juicing, but eat as natural as possible. General rule of thumb is — if it comes in a box or was made in a factory, don’t do it!
  3. KEEP YOUR BROWS TIDY: Natural beauty doesn’t have to mean unibrows. Eyebrows frame the face and therefore can be a focal point when you don’t have anything else on your face.
  4. ALWAYS WASH BEFORE BED: Take it off and let your skin breath! Even though you’re not wearing makeup during the day, it is still important to wash away the dirt and pollution from the day before bed at night.
