The Benefits of Externing

October 24, 2013
By

The best way I can describe externing is in a way it’s like choosing a college. An Externship offers you a chance to visit a salon, observe their practices and get a feel for whether the ambiance and apprenticeship curriculum fits your personal learning styles.

There are a few things I would recommend someone to be realistic about when externing. It would be wise to ask the following questions:

1) Do you offer an apprenticeship program, and if so, how long is it?
Some programs can span anywhere between 6 months to 2 years. And since nearly all apprenticeship programs offer only minimum wage you need to be realistic to the type of lifestyle you’ll be living during that time.

2) Does your salon specialize or do you allow your stylists to cut and color?
This pertains to where you want to see yourself in the future. You may feel your talents lay stronger in one skill than the other. Or you may want to keep your career interesting by learning both. That’s up to you.

3) What’s the average employment time of your staff?
This gives you an idea of the turn-around for the employees. If the average span is more than 3 years, it’s a good sign that the staff is happy and that clientele is growing. Anything less may indicate inconsistencies in those categories.

Those questions I feel are mandatory but you should feel free customize your questions based on your lifestyle and career path.

But I would make sure that during your apprenticeship, the salon is allowing you more duties than just the basic chores of towel laundry and cleaning color bowls. You should be allowed to do at least one shampoo and observe haircuts.

Besides all those points, also just try to enjoy yourself. Try to envision what it’d be like to come to work everyday to that particular location. Because no matter what, the place you choose should just feel right.

My Experience at Cinta Aveda

Working on a guest at the Student Salon!

My experience at Cinta Aveda Institute has been an amazing journey. I chose Cinta Aveda because it had been recommended by friends and other stylists in the city as one of the best beauty schools in the city. I am thrilled because indeed I received an excellent education. I do not have a single complaint. The people working at Cinta Aveda are very friendly and helpful which creates a great learning environment.

Learning about makeup with Stephanie

As students, we are lucky to have such talented educators. One of my favorite educators is my beta instructor Stephanie. She is a wonderful mentor and a very inspiring talented stylist. Stephanie shared her experience and accomplishments in the beauty industry with her students which was very inspiring to me and my fellow students at the school.

Practice facial and finishing up work!

I also love the products that we work with. I had never used Aveda products before I attended the institute, but they are amazing. I fell in love with the products and now I only use Aveda hair and skin products myself.

In class

I really love the environment, where everyone treats each other with respect and in a professional manner. I am grateful that I chose Cinta Aveda not only because we have amazing educators but also because of the structure of the school. I think it’s really important to have a great educational structure.

Group of friends by the fire escape

When I first started beauty school I thought it would be like the movie Mean Girls but my experience here is totally different. I met great people who I see myself being friends with for a very long time and who I look forward to work with in the business. My classmates are wonderful and have grown to me like family.

A Fashion Show for Creative Team

Cinta Aveda really prepared their students to be the best of the best. Coming from Cinta Aveda we learned great cutting and coloring techniques. I am sure that everyone who graduates Cinta Aveda is going to be ready and prepared for the real world because of the high standards of the school. Another thing that I enjoyed about Cinta Aveda is being able to participate in Creative Team. I think it’s a great experience for all students to experience working in photo shoots and fashion shows and other creative aspects of the industry.

A class group photo!

I am very pleased that I chose Cinta Aveda and thankful that I met these great people this past year. I can’t wait to see everyone grow professionally and become successful.

Another Creative Team Fashion Show!

Why I Chose Cinta Aveda Institute

After completing my college education and working in the stressful world of investment banking I decided it was time for a change. In exploring my next career choice I thought about what I really enjoyed in life, what I spent my spare time doing. I have always been the girl who took extra time finding the perfect outfit to coordinate with my newest pair of heels and lipstick. The girl whose friends always asked for advice on hair and makeup and enjoyed making them up for nights out. A life in the beauty industry was the solution to my problem, finding the right school was my next step.

The Cinta Aveda Institute stood out to me for the following reasons and after completing my program I can tell you I hands down made the right decision.

1. The Schedule: 3 days a week for 10 hours a day

I know 10 hours sounds like a long day but its really only 2 hours longer than a normal work day. Only having school 3 days a week gives you the option to work too. Although cosmetology school can be a full-time job, working in a salon, which I’ve done during my entire time at the institute, has really prepared me for life after beauty school.

2. Working with Aveda:

I attended Chico State University and minored in Business Sustainability. I left college with a strong belief in caring about the world, as well as, what cosmetics I put on my body. Aveda’s dedication to natural products, the world in which we live and giving back to the communities, really influenced my decision to attend. Since being a student, I’ve realized how important my decision to be part of the Aveda system truly is. Beyond their dedication to being a sustainable brand, their name is highly regarded in the beauty and salon industry.

3. The Location: Downtown San Francisco

The Cinta Aveda Institute’s location is perfection. Not only is it easily accessible by public transit but the school has a huge clientele base. You see everyone from young college students, to foreigners on vacation, to professionals working in downtown San Francisco. The difference in hair types, textures and services is exponential. The salon floor itself is beautiful. Its clean and open, with hardwood floors, brick walls, and on the 3rd floor of the building.

Article of Inspiration: Antoinette Beenders

Antoinette Beenders is Aveda’s creative director. She has been for years and continues to grow the Aveda name with her strong belief in education and perfection. She was premiered in the latest issue of Behind The Chair on paper. For those of you who aren’t aware of this magazine, it’s a must-have if you are in the beauty industry.

There is an intimate article about her start in life as a hair dresser, emphasizing that her journey was not easy and it took determination and hard work to get where she is today. She never accepted ‘no,’ and never accepted anything less than perfect. As a young Dutch woman she moved to London without knowing how to speak English. Not really having a plan other than to surround herself with successful people, she achieved her goal and worked with industry leaders. Later, becoming a platform artist and accepting a position from the owner of Aveda.

Her decision to accept this job from Aveda didn’t come easy, but she was ready to make a name for herself and be a part of world that she was less familiar with. This article was inspirational for me as a student at Cinta Aveda institute. I take pride in knowing that Ms. Beenders worked so hard to get where she is now, she’s a perfectionist, and created an Aveda curriculum that ensures haircuts to be articulate and mindful.

I connected with her, because there was a point in her career where she didn’t get to spend any time with her husband. She decided that life’s too short to not spend it with the people you love, so her husband goes everywhere she does so they can spend as much time as possible together even on business trips. I admire this thoughtfulness, because it is difficult to spend time with the people I love, and I haven’t even graduated school yet. Her success is inspiring and I’m proud to be a part of the Aveda family.

My Cosmetology School Experience at Cinta Aveda Institute

February 20, 2013

My experience at the Cinta Aveda Institute was really amazing to go through. At Cinta Aveda, I learned the unique techniques to become a successful hairstylist. I am coming to the end of my time as a cosmetology school student. I am graduating on March, 28th and I am so excited; I cannot wait to be done and have my cosmetology license. The school provides us all the tools we need for to be successful in the real world I personally think
the school is a perfect fit for everyone who wants to be a professional cosmetologist.

They have really good educators who are always supporting you, and they are always proud of the work you do. They care about your education and that we all get the most out of it. They are going to share all their knowledge in the way you understand; they are very respectful with the students and offer a wonderful environment to be in. From the moment I walked into this Institute I felt I belonged.

The professionalism that this school showed was amazing. All the different things I learned every time I stepped foot into this place always keeps my head spinning. I am proud to tell people that I attend the Aveda Institute and I am sure that when the program is finnished I’ll be proud to say that I learned all the special techniques from the Aveda Institute.

At Cinta Aveda you will learn everything you need to know in order to be a successful Cosmetologist. I have learned so much and my life has changed because I have something to call my own in terms of achievement and success. Aveda has made me want to accomplish my goals and dreams. I love the Cinta Aveda Institute.

My Time at the Institute.

February 14, 2013
By

After almost seventeen months I am finally approaching the end of my time here at the Cinta Aveda Institute. I am so grateful for the knowledge the institute has given me as well as for how much my personal and professional skills have expanded. My experience here from the time I walked in to have my initial interview to now has been overall a great one.

I chose to attend Aveda after looking into a few other schools in the area, and I feel that this was by far the best choice. When I came for my tour everybody seemed friendly and fairly goal-oriented. I loved how clean and neat everything looked and the fact that sold it for me was that I would be using amazing products that I believe in.

I was really excited to start and Kevin, my intro teacher, could not have been more perfect for introducing the basics and the products. I was nervous at first but he is an amazing teacher and I think that he does a great job at keeping everybody feeling comfortable as well as staying on task.

Once I moved to the student floor I learned so much, I can’t even believe how much I have learned in such a short time. All the instructors here are very experienced and amazing at what they do. I am so lucky to be learning from such a talented group of people.

The Aveda color line is amazing and even though I am more interested in cutting I love that we can formulate to get the perfect color every time. Starting off with a more complex, customizable line will definitely benefit the Aveda student in the future whether or not they decide to stay with the Aveda family after their time at the institute.

After completing my sixteen hundred hours here I will feel prepared and confident while going into the industry and finding the right salon for me. I still have a lot to learn but the fundamentals that have been instilled in me here will stick with me forever.

Since I am approaching my end date I have been reflecting on my time here and I can honestly say that it has been overall a great time. I have made friends that I know will stick with me for life. I’m not going to lie and say that every moment here has been perfect, I have definitely had my ups and downs, but after all the blood, sweat, and tears I have become a better person and have learned how to work hard and be on time.

The institute has not only taught me how to cut and color hair, but also how to maintain a professional image and a work-friendly attitude. I have grown so much during my time here and I thank everybody who has helped me along the way. I am excited to finally graduate and start my career as a cosmetologist!

Discovering Cinta Aveda

February 2, 2013
By

I came to Cinta Aveda Institute in May of 2011. I had always had an interest in doing hair, however I never really recognized it for what it was. I was always the person who was asked to do a friend’s hair when they needed it, partly because I was very creative with my own hair, especially my own color.

I used to do my own color in my tiny dorm room in college. I started doing my friends’ hair by cutting my roommate’s hair. Gradually people just started asking me, and I started doing it. If I didn’t know how to do something, I researched it online and tried it out.

As I was nearing the end of college, I was doing regular cuts and color for most of my friends. I had an “Ah-ha” moment when I realized that I could do this everyday as a career and get paid for it. At the time I was about to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in photography. As I was making my way through college, I had started realizing that while I love photography as an art from and I love to do it, I didn’t want to do it as a career, day-in day-out.

I started looking into cosmetology schools as a possibility for when I graduated. At the time, the economy was horrible and new college graduates didn’t have much hope for getting a job right out of college. It was all around a good time to start an education in cosmetology.

In looking into schools, I soon found out that many beauty schools only focus on getting their students to pass the state board exam, but they didn’t focus on actually teaching students how to succeed in a salon environment. I wanted a school that would help me transition into a higher-end salon. I knew I didn’t want to graduate and then immediately go on to rent a chair somewhere.

I researched and toured several different schools in the area. Cinta Aveda Institute impressed me immediately when I walked in. It struck me because everyone was so professional and welcoming, it was really a place I wanted to be. I haven’t regretted my decision at all. I am a few days away from graduating from their cosmetology program, will be moving on to the barbering program, and I am very excited to be finished and going out into a salon.

Why I Chose Cinta Aveda Institute

January 3, 2013
By

I’ve always admired Barbers and the way they work, their shops, clientele and what they do. When I was a kid, my dad would always take me to the Barber Shop to get my hair cut while my mom always went to a salon. I have several friends who are Barbers and I spend time hanging out with them in their shops and as the saying goes: “Spend enough time in a Barber Shop, you’re going to get a haircut”. So, with the resurgence of Barber Shops, it’s now time for me to learn Barbering.

So my quest began with looking up the various Barber Colleges in the Bay Area. There weren’t many so I figured it would be easy, right? Yeah…not really. I toured three different Barber Schools and kept seeing the same thing: not a lot of happy students and no one (even the educators) seemed to be interested in being there. It felt that everyone was there to just learn the basics and get out to make that money. I found myself telling the admissions coordinators (at one school there wasn’t one) that I’d take the information and think about it. In short, I was starting to feel discouraged about my decision to become a Barber.

While visiting one of my friends, a recent graduate of Cinta Aveda, told me to try out the school. He told me how much he enjoyed coming to the school and while it was only Cosmetology, he got an awesome education and the school looks good on a resume. So I decided to check it out. I went to the website to set up an appointment to view the school, receiving a call within that same day from both Jocelyn and Katie to set up an appointment for later in the week. This amazed me because the other schools I looked at never set-up an appointment that fast. In fact, they never called me back in the first place. I had to “drop-in” to the other schools to get a tour or info for that matter.

Pinterest: Barbering

My appointment was on a Wednesday with Katie. We toured the school and I noticed that all the students on the salon floor were not like the other schools, everyone wanted to be there. All the students seemed like they wanted to learn and to do their best. This was evident on the salon floor and in the classroom too. Everyone was excited to be at this school! When it came down to brass tacks, Katie and I sat down to talk particulars. I expressed that originally I wanted to be a Barber but I could learn Cosmetology first and maybe go on to a Barber Crossover elsewhere (in California, Cosmetology and Barbering are both 1600 hours and an additional 400 hours for the crossover to get both licenses). I was then informed that Cinta Aveda was beginning to offer Barber Crossover to Aveda Alumni only so it was possible that I could get my education for both licenses at one school. That was it! That was what made my decision final.

Cinta Aveda Educators and Students

While on the school tour, I was more interested in coming to Cinta Aveda Institute than to any other school. But finding out that I could learn to be a Cosmetologist and a Barber from the same institute cemented my decision. This meant that I could put in my 1600 hours, learn from some amazing educators and set my state board test dates with the knowledge (and confidence) that I can pass that test, both tests, from the same institute. I signed up that same day. Two days later was the orientation class and the following Tuesday was my first day in school. Never in my life have I ever been so confident and the least hesitant in making such a quick decision!

My time here at Cinta Aveda Institute has been amazing! I’ve met some seriously creative people, some amazing educators that never seem to run out of things to teach and some awesome tricks to help me in my future as a Cosmetologist (and Barber, but let’s not get the cart before the horse).

Students at a Volunteer Event!

I am currently in the Alpha phase of school, on the salon floor and cutting hair already. I get to work alongside of the very first Barbering class coming out of Cinta Aveda (and I’m also their shave model…talk about win-win) watching those students learn and grow alongside of us. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for me in Cosmo and look forward to starting the Barbering phase as soon as I finish my 1600 hours. For the first time ever in my life, I’m not looking forward to the day when I’m done with school.

If you’re hesitant about learning Cosmetology or Barbering, I recommend coming to the school to take a tour. You will see how awesome this school is!

Beauty Trends: Neo Goth

November 6, 2012

Antoinette Beenders is the director of the Aveda Artistic Team and she has created the brilliant new Fall line. “Neo Goth” is the new look that everyone should at least want to re-create for a hot date or fabulous party. It has a twist of edginess and classy all intertwined.

With a strong dark lip, strong smokey eye, or both, it has created a fierce intense look to catch anyone’s attention. I think it is a remarkable statement and yet so simple that I’m not sure why no one has thought to do it recently.

Antoinette says,

We captured the strength and emotion of the neo-gothic movement and reframed it by adding fragility and romance to the look. By pairing it with graphic futurism of Japanese manga and anime we created images that are almost otherworldly.

Along with the makeup you can add an edgy haircut or straight and modern to go as an accessory. Just like with clothing you add a belt to your outfit to give it that extra ‘aw.’ Mixing a dark red-burgundy lipstick with a black matte smokey eye and a red violet hair color.

With dark hair color plays with the illusion of shadow by melting unique colors together. Using these dark tones around the featured areas of the face help accent in the perfect way and create the look of a classic beauty.

The styles are iconic in design, yet feel modern, even futuristic—and have our collection’s gothic edge.

Allen Ruiz, Artistic Director for Styling said. I think that this look is just the beginning of what new and fashion-forward steps Aveda is taking.
