Product Review: Aveda Dry Remedy Oil

Aveda’s new Dry Remedy Oil quickly became a must-have product in my professional hairstyling kit. I find myself using it on every guest during their service as it’s one of those incredible products that can benefit everybody’s hair type.

Dry Remedy Oil, 99.9% naturally derived, offers weightless shine and maximum condition to the hair without leaving a heavy, greasy finish like most other oils on the market. Other oils often contain silicones which makes a serum-like product. Those form a heavier type of styling aid, and can build up in the hair, weighing it down and leaving a greasy finish.

But because of the way Dry Remedy Oil is formulated, it offers great versatility. With any texture hair—even fine—I will add a few drops prior to styling, and then finish with a few drops for maximum softness and shine. This product is one of my secret weapons. Show a client how they can use it in their dry hair and they’re immediately hooked.

The benefits are real. It instantly adds up to 41% more moisture to the hair with its buriti oil. It also deeply penetrates the cuticle, and seals down any frizz or fly-aways. To demonstrate the full advantage of the oil, I like to apply the oil only to one side of their hair and then allow them to compare both sides. Sometimes guests have a hard time wrapping their head around why a stylist is telling them to add a new product to their routine. But offering a lesson on how to use it, and showing them the physical changes in their hair, ends up changing their mind.

Argan — an Aveda Ingredient

October 29, 2014

ArganOn the edge of the Sahara desert in Morocco is the indigenous argan forest. Local Berber women, determined to save it from desertification, found help in the form of Professor Zoubida Charrouf of the Faculté des sciences at the Université Mohammed V of Rabat. She was able to help them form the Targanine Network—a cooperative in their local village. In partnership with Aveda, the women of the Targanine Network are able to process the nuts from the argan trees more efficiently to sell to international markets.

For hundreds of years the locals ate the fruit and nut from the argan tree and it was a major part of their lives. Over hundreds of years, the Berber women have used the argan oil for medicinal purposes, cooking, and beauty, while the shells were used for heating. Aveda sources 100% of its argan oil, which is certified organic, from the Targanine Network and have provided funding to purchase processing equipment that helps the women separate the seeds, thus increasing their productivity.

The argan tree lives to be between 150-200 years old and does not start producing the fruit until it is 30-50 years old. The beauty benefits from the oil produced from the seed of the fruit have become well known around the world. For hair, argan oil adds moisture and tames frizzy ends. If you have a dry scalp, you can dab some argan oil along the scalp before washing your hair. For the face, people apply argan oil directly after cleansing and treatments. At Aveda, argan is used in the Green Science line. It has been proven in case studies to show more smoothness to the face creating a clear and radiant glow to the skin.

Aveda Botanical Treatment

Most of us love to color our hair. Now, in 2014, silver ash color hair is very “in”, or color melting aka Ómbre. Have you ever noticed after your color service, your hair feels like hay? Yes, I said hay–with a stringy straw like texture. This happens because we’re opening the cuticle to lift cortex. With process, you walk out of your salon with beautifully colored hair, but now the pH level in the hair is off. What I like to do, both for myself and my guests, is use the Aveda Botanical Treatment.

Aveda Botanical Products

The Aveda Botanical Treatment comes in 3 different formulas: Damage Remedy, Scalp Remedy, and Dry Remedy. Plus, there are three concentrate oil formulas: Soothing, Conditioning, and Purifying. My favorite Aveda Botanical Treatments to use are the Dry Remedy and the Damage Remedy, mixed with the Soothing concentrate oil and Conditioning concentrate oil. This mixture really helped me after overly coloring my hair four different colors within a year. It’s safe to say that I had a lot of damage going on.

When I was in Beta phase is when I started doing more research on our Aveda Botanical Treatment. My educator at the time cut my hair into a very short bob. About three months later, another student and
I were talking and she noticed that my scalp was super itchy (also I was probably scratching or patting my head a lot that day due to the irritation I was going through). She asked me if I’ve ever tried our Aveda Botanical Treatment since I’ve been eyeing it lately. I said no but I should.

We mixed Dry Remedy, Damage Remedy, Scalp Remedy, plus two concentrate oil, the Soothing concentrate oil and the Conditioning concentrate oil. I have to say, it’s been almost a year and about five treatments. I no longer have to use Scalp Remedy as much as I use the other because my scalp feels so much better and my hair is getting past my shoulders now. I love this Aveda Botanical Treatment. It’s hands down the best, and I’ve tried lots of different deep conditioning products. So go out there to an Aveda school or an Aveda salon and try a Botanical Treatment.

New Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight

Product - Aveda Smooth InfusionHave you ever struggled keeping your hair naturally straight? Living in San Francisco and having curly hair, the fog always finds a way to bring back my curls. But with Aveda’s new Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight, I have found a balance. The other day I had a guest with curly hair. After her daily routine of letting her hair air, it always seemed to be frizzy.

I know what you’re thinking: “I thought that it was only for blowing straight and to help when flat ironing the hair.” But no, I’ve been trying new things. On the day that my guest wanted beach waves, I was very happy to hear it. I’d been telling her all day about the new Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight product. So I brought over the Dry Remedy oil, the Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight, Volumizing Tonic (for memory hold), and Air Control. They’re all light weight products, which I think is the best after a fresh hair cut.

I start with a little Dry Remedy oil and a little Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight (Naturally Straight also has heat protection in its formula), then I rough dry the hair to about 70% dry. Next, I take about a dime size of Dry Remedy oil and Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight, work into the hair starting from ends to root, then add the Volumizing Tonic spraying from end to root. I then choose the proper size round brush and section the hair into about 1/4 inch sections, split in two. With the round brush, I start with the brush under the hair and the blow dryer on top but not touching the hair or brush. I start directing the up and the down. Next I switch the round and the blow dry.

This next step is very important. I take the blow dryer and the brush and choose which way I want the body to flow. So I over direct the hair, flipping the hair the same way. Repeat throughout the whole head. Finishing touch with Air Control and a little lip stick or gloss to help polish off the new look.

The Many Ways to Use Dry Remedy Moisturizing Oil

The new reformulated Dry Remedy line is an absolute favorite of mine. It adds just enough moisture without weighing hair down, and leaves hair smelling fresh with a soft herbal aroma. Dry Remedy just came out with a new additional styling product called Daily Moisturizing Oil. It’s 99% naturally derived and uses buriti oil from a sweet palm nut that is packed with hydrating nutrients, instead of synthetics. The lack of silicone means no grease slick on your hair, and only a drop or two is needed!

The most awesome thing about the new Daily Moisturizing Oil is that you can use it in various ways, in damp & dry, straight & curly, and fine & course hair! The product’s versatility makes it one of my favorites.

The oil acts as both a treatment for your hair, and a styling product. A few drops can be applied to damp hair before heat styling to create a soft, silky look. The antioxidants, beta-carotene, and fatty acids in buriti oil will work to penetrate hair and actually improve its health. The oil can also be used as a styling finisher to smooth away flyaways. Emulsify a couple drops in your palms and gently pat the crown of your styled, dry head. The oil will gently seal down any frizzies and enhance straight looks. Another way to use the Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil is to finger comb into curly hair, and/or mix a little bit with Confixor to add extra shine and separation to curls.

You will be so impressed with the luxuriousness of this product, and its ability to be used in so many different ways. Not only will your hair be instantly moisturized by 41% but it will smell wonderful and glisten.

Aveda’s Invati Line

October 11, 2012
By

So many people jokingly ask me if I can give them more hair, and I say “well, Aveda just came out with a product that reduces hair loss and makes your hair feel thicker and fuller!”

The new Invati line is quite an amazing development in terms of taking nautrual ingredients and doing something that heavy chemicals have only had minimal success with in the past. The Invati line is not Rogaine, it is not proven to grow hair where there is absolutely none. However, there are quite a few testimonials that it has at least some success in growing hair even in bald spots.

The secret is to use the whole system together.

  • Invati Exfoliating Shampoo: Uses wintergreen-derived salicylic acid to cleanse the scalp of sebum build up leaving the follicles open for the hair to come through.
  • Invati Thickening Conditioner: Uses arginine derived from sugar beets and soy protein to strengthen the hair and prevent breakage allowing the hair to grow longer and feel thicker.
  • Invati Scalp Revitalizer: Uses a blend of Ayurvedic herbs, such as turmeric and ginseng to invigorate the scalp and bring the blood full of nutrients to the surface to enrich the hair bulb so the hair can grow strong.

The shampoo and conditioner should be used as you would use any other shampoo/conditioner. However, the scalp revitalizer should be used twice a day, morning and night. To apply the scalp revitalizer take sections of your hair parallel to your part and going horizontally spray it on the scalp. Then, give it a good five minute massage all over. When you hair has reached the level of thickness you want you can reduce your use of the system to once a week or very fourth or fifth time you wash your hair.

Outer Peace Acne Relief

September 12, 2012

Ever since I was in high school I have dealt with acne.  I have tried everything for it, from Neutrogena, Clean and Clear and even a doctor prescribe benzoyl peroxide topical cream. Finally I decided to be an esthetician and came across Cinta Aveda Institute. I had never used Aveda products, so when I saw that they had an acne line (Outer Peace Acne Relief) and an acne facial I was really excited.  After trying both of those combinations together my skin has been better than ever and healthier too. I have learned that there is no cure for acne but it can be treated.

Outer Peace Acne Relief Product Descriptions:

  1. Cleanser : Cleans deep into pores—dissolving oil, makeup and other impurities—without irritation or over drying skin
  2. Acne Pads: Cleanses, exfoliates, unclogs pores—to help wipe out blackheads and prevent new breakouts.
  3. Acne spot relief: Eliminate breakouts—and the bacteria that lead to more—while reducing redness and swelling. Ideal when extra help is called for.
  4. Lotion: Helps clear blemishes—and keep oil under control—while shrinking the look of pores. Balances moisture, so skin’s not over dry or shiny.

My results:

  • I follow this 4-step skin care regimen once in the morning and once at night. It doesn’t dry my skin at all. It leaves it smooth and feeling refreshed. I must say I truly love these products and so does my skin. If you have dealt with acne and nothing is working I would definitely try this line.

Tip:

  • like with all skin care regimens you must follow a strict regimen to get the best results. It might be a little more expensive than drugstores acne regimens but its worth the price.

Aveda Brilliant Damage Control Spray

September 6, 2012
By

As a Cinta Aveda student stylist, one of my favorite products that I have come to love and tend to use over and over no matter what type of hair my clients have is the AVEDA BRILLIANT DAMAGE CONTROL spray.  It is quite a miracle worker, useful for all hair types, no matter if one has fine hair or the coarsest,  thickest head of hair.  It is an amazing product that is the foundation for any hairstyle. It works great as a pre-styling tool to detangle, protect hair from heat and thermal styling and also condition the hair to keep from pesky fly-aways.  It contains 96% naturally derived ingredients such as moisturizing products like chamomile flower, calendula extract and aloe leaf juice. It also protects from UV rays.

To use, spray on freshly shampooed, towel dried hair, blow dry and then style as usual (it also protects your locks if you are a flat iron or curling iron junkie!) .  The difference is undeniable.  Hair is noticeably softer, smoother and less frizzy than if one didn’t use anything at all.  It is also quite light and does not leave hair sticky or heavy with product which I know is a great concern for a lot of folks.   I also tend to recommend this product to those clients who are a very low maintenance type of person.  If he/she does not like to use any product at all, I would recommend at least convincing them to use this one product at the very least!   They will notice a difference!

Voila, You Have Curls!

August 29, 2012

For curly hair it is hard to find the right products and way to style. I would know; my hair is infuriatingly curly at times.  I have found the Be Curly styling products from Aveda make my hair quite manageable.  The Be Curly line is designed to give the hair moisture so frizz is controlled and the curls are sleek and bouncy.  All you have to do is wash with the Be Curly Shampoo, Be Curly Conditioner and use the Dry Remedy Treatment mask every third or fourth time you wash your hair.

While you hair is towel dried apply a half a dime size amount of the Be Curly Style Prep, then a dime size amount of the Be Curly Curl Enhancer.  If you feel like you need more of either product because you have a lot of hair or it is really long try and keep with the same ratio.  A good thing to do as well is start your product application at the bottom of your hair and move up so you don’t get too much at the top and make it look greasy.  Do not mix the products, apply one and then the other.

Section your hair going horizontally, the bigger the sections the looser the curl will be.  Then,  take a vertical section from that horizontal sectioning to make a “box” like section of hair.  Twist the hair around itself, then take another section. You can switch direction as you twist if you want to variate curl pattern.  Continue until all the hair is twisted.

Now, using a diffuser, set the hair in the diffuser attachment and keep it still while you blow it dry.  Movement will create frizz. You can tilt your head to the side and back or even flip your head down so you get volume at the top. When the hair is completely dry shake out the twists gently, and voila you have curls!

Discovering Aveda

August 13, 2012
By

It was all an accident, how I found Aveda.  I originally was looking for a specific product with another company to help my severely damaged hair. I was shopping in Santana Row and had walked into 3 salons and Aveda was the last.  I did not know anything about Aveda and was about to walk out, because they did not sell the product I wanted.  A sales associate approached me and asked what it was I wanted to achieve and I am grateful she did!

I explained to her how I bleached/lightened my hair 4 times in 1 week, going from black to platinum blonde.  My hair was fried, frizzy and definitely dry.  She introduced the Smooth Infusion line to me and I purchased the serum, shampoo, conditioner and prep product.  Before I purchased each item I went into the bathroom and quickly read the reviews online to ensure it was going to work. It is a must to research any product I purchase before I add it to my daily beauty regime. There were over a 1,000 ratings for the products rating it close to perfect.

I was more than satisfied with the results. My hair was amazingly soft and shiny. It was then I realized how great Aveda must be. I had tried many other well known brands, but nothing compared to Aveda.

I can say I was no longer embarrassed to walk around because of my hair being severely damaged.

This was the first great experience I had with Aveda before I even knew I wanted to attend the Cinta Aveda Institute.
