The Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Female model with exfoliated skin.

If you’ve never heard of Microdermabrasion, it is an amazing machine that can help to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, increase the production of collagen and elastin, smooth out and retexture the skin, and help to diminish sun spots, scarring, and other discolorations. This machine creates a mechanical exfoliation using small crystals as well as vacuum suction. The vacuum sucks the skin up while the crystals work to exfoliate dead skin cells and imperfections.

Exfoliation is important for all skin types, including the most healthy of skins, to ensure the process of cell turnover. As we age, the rate of our cell turnover—or the amount of time it takes new skin cells to reach the surface and replace the old, dead ones—becomes slower and slower. For this reason, we all need a little help with desquamating the old skin cells. Microdermabrasion is an excellent way to slough off those dead skin cells to reveal a more polished and lively skin tone.

Another benefit of this treatment, in comparison to other forms of deeper exfoliation such as chemical peels, is that there is relatively no downtime. You can leave the spa the same day with a glowing and fresh complexion.

These treatments can be done alone, or in conjunction to an anti-aging, skin brightening, or deep cleansing facial. It is also extremely beneficial when compared with a gentle peel, to really stimulate cell turnover, as well as to decrease pigmentation and sun damage. In addition, for desirable results, it is necessary to have more than one treatment. Microdermabrasion is a progressive treatment, requiring anywhere from two to twelve treatments to see the desired change in your skin.

Check out your local spa scene to see which spas offers this amazing service.

There are a few things to consider to make sure your treatment goes off without a hitch:

  • Make sure your treatment is followed up with some kind of hydrating product. For full facials, a nice hydrating mask is perfect following microdermabrasion, as exfoliated skin can drink up all the nutrients of the mask. For shorter services, a hydrating serum or rich moisturizer can do the trick.
  • It is also crucial that a good sunscreen be applied following your service, as exfoliated skin is more susceptible to sun damage. Aim for at least an SPF of 30, but SPF 50 is ideal.
  • Furthermore, as one of the goals of this treatment is to help to reduce sun damage, it might be a good idea to avoid prolonged time in the sun for a few days.

The Impact of Getting Less Sleep

Sleeping Woman with Alarm ClockWhen you are older, you don’t need to have as much sleep as you did when you’re younger. However, there are many studies that prove we need at least eight hours of sleep every night. Getting eight hours of sleep can not only make you feel much better throughout the day, but can also help make you look better, too.

New research from the Sleep School in London and Benson Beds shows that if you miss two hours of sleep—only get six hours a night—for five days, it can have a big impact on your face. The study consisted of 30 woman who took photos of their faces after eight hours of sleep and then came back after five days of only six hours of sleep. Fine lines were increased by 45% where spots increased by 13%. There was 16% more bacteria found on the skin and redness went up 8% as well.

So go to bed early! Wash off your makeup, cleanse your face, put moisturizer on, and use those eight hours of sleep for your face to replenish itself. You will look more alive in the morning and your skin will glow. Compare that to less sleep with bags under your eyes and and redness. Whenever you’re able, hit that snooze button more often!

Five Things You Should Know Before Your First Brazilian

Brazilian Wax Bikini Area

Brazilian waxing has definitely become the newest craze in the beauty industry. In fact, it is becoming a regular routine for women, who simply like to remain bare! If you have never been waxed before and are thinking of taking the plunge, there are definitely some things you should know before going in for your treatment. As someone who worked at a waxing salon for over a year, there are a few things that I noticed from clients who were new to waxing; had they had a little bit of information, their first time would have gone a little bit ‘smoother.’ Here are five tips that you should know before getting your first Brazilian wax.

  1. If you are a shaver, you have to give your hair adequate time to grow out before your first Brazilian wax. Many clients transitioning from shaving to waxing do not know that they cannot shave before waxing. Your hair must be at least as long as a grain of rice in order to wax, and often times you will not get a clean wax if you have shaved the week before, because your hair will be on different growth cycles. In addition, the short coarse hair, due to shaving, may cause the experience to be a bit more painful. To ensure a more flawless and easy wax, let your hair grow out as long as possible first.
  2. Some estheticians do not give their clients a rulebook for the delicate twenty-four hours after having a Brazilian wax. Because you have removed the hair from the follicle, and did some light exfoliation, the open hair follicle is susceptible to bacterial invasion. Typically it takes about twenty-four hours for the follicle to close up again. So during that time period, avoid steam rooms, taking hot baths, and hot yoga. These types of environment create the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. On a side note, a lot of clients who have had bacterial infections assume that it is the spa’s fault for using contaminated wax when, more likely, that is not the case. We all carry various strains of bacteria on our body, including staphylococci, the bacteria responsible for staph infections. Bacteria cannot penetrate solid, intact skin so normally our body is not in danger of infection. After waxing however, the skin is more vulnerable to this bacteria, so this advice is particularly important. In addition, avoid sexual activity for twenty-four hours, as this is a very easy way to spread bacteria. It may be tempting to show off your clean wax, but give it a day to heal up!
  3. Exfoliation in between waxing sessions is key to ensure you do not get ingrown hairs. When shaving, ingrown hairs are not as big of an issue because the hair is not being removed from the root, it is simply be shortened. So there is still an open pathway for that hair to grow back in. With waxing, the hair is being completely removed from the follicle, so sometimes the new hair gets trapped underneath the skin, which can cause an infection or inflammation. The way to prevent this is to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. About two days after your wax, it is okay to begin exfoliating the area. You may use a scrub in the shower, or scrubby gloves—making sure to clean the gloves after each use to avoid bacteria—or you can use an exfoliating solution with something like salicylic, lactic, or glycolic acid to digest dead skin cells. Exfoliating will help your bikini area remain smooth and healthy.
  4. Another new concept for people transitioning from shaving to waxing is the idea of letting the hair grow in between waxing. The typical time period between Brazilian maintenance is four to six weeks, but that can differ depending on your growth cycle, which may be a little messed up due to shaving. Between those four to six weeks, let your hair grow back in to ensure a nice clean wax. It may be an adjustment for some, but you will get used to the waxing cycle and come to love it!
  5. Lastly, it might be helpful to take a Tylenol or ibuprofen about thirty minutes before your first waxing appointment. This well help to ease the pain of the first time wax, as well as help to stop inflammation. Also remember to breathe and try to relax!

Aveda’s Perfecting Plant Peel

Aveda Product - Perfecting Plant PeelI love Aveda’s Perfecting Plant Peel, and every client I do this on absolutely loves the way their skin looks and feels immediately after. Powered by plants, Aveda’s Perfecting Plant Peel system performs like 30% glycol without the redness and irritation. It is a facial masque which actively smoothes with instant exfoliation and radiance. This can be performed as a standalone 30 minute service or an add on to our signature facials. Your skin will have an amazing glow immediately after the service.

I believe you get the full plant peel when used with the steamer. I like to apply the plant peel and let the client sit under steam for about seven minutes, while I do a hand/arm massage. When the seven minutes are up, I spray the activating spray over the face and massage it in so it warms up. I like to combine this with the hydrating mask mixed with a little Outer Peace Cooling Masque to cool and hydrate the skin after. When the client looks in the mirror they immediately notice smaller pores and a glowing face. I always get excited to see the look on their face when they see their skin. If you feel the client could benefit from this peel, you should always recommend and explain the amazing immediate results they will get. It is an extra $10.00 on top of the facial price, but I promise it is worth it.

The Perfect Blowout

Blonde Female ModelDuring my education at the Cinta Aveda Institute, I have been assisting at the Zindagi Salon on Grant Street. Absorbing as much as I could in a real-life professional salon, I was able to perfect my skills in shampoo and style. It matters what tools you are using and, as a stylist, it is important to invest in the right tools. Although it may be pricey to have the perfect arsenal while in school, saving up and acquiring sturdy tools will help you save in the long-run, as cheaper tools, non-specific for hairstylists, will break or deteriorate faster. More expensive tools will produce better results and last you longer. The saying is true in this case: You get what you pay for. Be savvy and shop around; you can find discounts if you look hard enough.

Personally, I enjoy using the ceramic round brush, specific for volume and shine. My guests so far have all enjoyed having voluminous “Texas Hair”. This calls for the Aveda Pure Abundance line, which comes as both shampoo and conditioner to create grit and texture, allowing the hair to be more full. I like to be generous with the volumizing tonic, it’s my go-to for every style. It’s a sweet-scented spray, heat-activated, and helps the root elevate creating a nice 60’s beehive look reminiscent of Amy Winehouse. I like to keep the crown last, and when working on the section, spritz the tonic at the root of the hair again after blow drying the rest of the head. Then I divide the crown into sections small enough and narrow enough to fit my brush, then blow dry upwards making sure the root gets blasted with heat. I make sure to have a nozzle on; that concentrates the heat to flow directly onto where I’m concentrating to create volume. Hair has a memory, when you wet the hair and dry it into a certain shape, this shape will stay until you wet the hair again, so blow drying upwards will coax the hair at the crown into feeling and looking fuller. Pin these sections into curls as if you had hot rollers with small clamp clips. Pin at the root. Finish off the crown and let cool dry, then take those curls out, and spray them with some Air Control hairspray to maintain this style during the day.

There you have it! My perfect blow-out for any day of the week and any occasion.

Brows Galore

Y3KUyf0jO8TBDr-zsIkJRoET1ckLetvQ1bJUzptkU-MBrows are probably the most important feature of the face. Brows explain emotion, express style, and are almost always what others are staring at on your face. Brows create the shape to the rest of your face, style, and present your attitude on personal grooming.

The evolution of brows has been drastic, whether it was thick bushy brows, or thin rounded ones, brows always need to be styled. Brow styling, or grooming, dates back to Ancient Egyptians, who used kohl, a dark, pigmented mineral to accentuate their brows. Egyptians would take the pigment and fill in their brows. When silent films began (around 1920s), facial expression was a major factor in explaining the story line. Women would shave their brows off and draw long, rounded brows. This way, whatever emotion they conveyed, the audience could understand it better.

The 1940s and 1950s had a fuller brow. Women still shaved, or blocked away, their brows, but usually only the outer half of the brow. Keeping the center brow allowed for a fuller, more natural brow, and drawing the second half could create a dramatic, high arched, full brow. Today’s popular brow is a combination of a thin and thick brow, where the natural shape is not only kept, but also groomed. The hair outside the natural shape is removed via wax, threaded, or tweezed, then the hair length is trimmed to match the brow shape.

No one wants others staring at your brows because they are unkept, which is why a multitude of brow bars have started. Women can go get their brows tamed for $20-$30, depending on the salon and how much upkeep is necessary. It’s a fun, easy, inexpensive way to feel pampered and leave feeling gorgeous!

6 Benefits of Coconut Oil for Your Hair

December 16, 2015
By

Rd4VivTlZ4b554IM9qy-h4KHaf2ioVoRJqKHrNAkHdoI’m sure you have heard that coconut oil is very beneficial and does amazing things to your hair, but have you ever wondered how or why?

Coconut oil is rich in carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals which are good for the human body. The components in the oil keep your hair strong, nourished and protected from the effects of premature aging, like baldness and excessive hair loss.

Some of the main benefits of coconut oil are:

1) It stimulates hair growth by getting deep into the hair follicles.

2) It promotes the scalp health by fighting against problems like insect bites, lice and dandruff

3) It helps moisturize dry hair

4) It adds luster, shine, and softness to the hair

5) It helps prevent hair breakage and split end

6) It helps slow down hair loss

Coconut oil is also very easy to use in the hair. You start by melting the oil in your hands until it becomes a liquid. Massage oil into your scalp, and down the hair until it is fully saturated. Leave in for as long as you desire. Leaving it in for 20 minutes is enough for a healthy and shiny look and feel. However, some people prefer to leave it in overnight with a hair cap for a intense deep treatment.

5 Tips For Shaving Better

YEx8PTeUMteUSD91rc5bBGWHz3RVxFWD6uujYIZpvYMThe majority of men are thrown right into the deep end when it comes to shaving and along the way we, as men, have picked up a number of common, but unhealthy habits for our skin. The resurgence of Barbering has brought to light many of these habits that may be easily corrected with a couple of key elements.

1) First, if you’re going to be taking a razor to your face do yourself a favor and prep your skin as much as time will allow you. With a standard straight razor shave in a shop, there are over 5 preparatory steps taken before the razor touches the face. Doing just a couple will make a difference.

2) Use a pre-shave oil, like an Aveda Composition oil. Many oils will work although oils marketed “pre-shave” are specifically designed for softening the beard and are ideal.

3) Warm the skin to soften those pores and relax the skin. Using a hot towel works great for coverage, a quick tip is to wet a face towel and throw it in the microwave for about one minute and drape it over your face until it cools.

4) Apply your shave cream, or lather immediately afterwards and go with the grain. Do this before you think about shaving against the grain. This is one of those things that causes the most irritation. AFTER you’ve shaved with the grain you can go back against the grain after re-applying lather, but it’s not recommended if you’re not a daily shaver.

5) Use that same towel to wipe residue and apply a non-alcohol after shave. The Aveda After Shave is excellent and has soothing lavender and lemon scents.

4 Benefits of Bergamot Oil

There are a lot of essential oils out there. One of my favorites is bergamot. There are so many benefits from using bergamot oil in your everyday light. Bergamot has a very sweet smell and it is very citrusy. It’s also very refreshing. I love putting it on after I get out of the shower or bathtub. So what can Bergamot oils do for you?

1) Bergamot is a natural anti-depressant and stimulant. Bergamot creates a feeling of freshness and joy and energy. In cases of depression it helps with sadness by improving blood flow and circulation. The stimulations also increases the secretions of digestive juices, biles, and insulin by basically acting as a natural digestion aider.

2) The oil is also known to be an antibiotic and disinfectant. Bergamot inhibits the growth of germs and virus and fungi. The oil also prevents infections including those on the skin. Bergamot also reduces the feeling of pain in the body. Another one of the great qualities of bergamot is that it can reduce nervous tension and it can treat ailments such associated with stress such as sleepiness and high blood pressure.

3) The oil is also a cicatirsant which means it aids in pigmentation issues and leaves your skin tone attractive and even in tone. You can use is on the after effects on long term acne post inflammatory hyper pigmentation.

4) Bergamot is also a popular as a natural deodorant. You have to be careful with un-natural deodorants because the lymph nodes in your under arms can easily absorb the toxins and fillers and nasty crud in those drug store brands. Nothing to worry about when bergamot is absorbed by the body! You get all the benefits from the oil flowing around in your body and you will smell great and natural!

A Few Words of Caution: Bergamot oil must be protected from sunlight, because bergaptene, one of its components, becomes poisonous if exposed to sunlight. That is why the oil should always be stored in dark bottles in dark places. Exposure to sunlight should even be avoided after it is applied or rubbed onto the skin, at least until it absorbs into your skin

9 Benefits of Patchouli Oil

TZtIkLag5PsLv2JY2nQSRlObBCaceLfLosQIWZ6pKJcPatchouli oil is my favorite of all the essential oils. The scent is the most relaxing thing in the world to me. I really enjoy rubbing it into my scarf so I can enjoy the scent all day. The best and most common benefit of patchouli oil is that it relieves stress! It is known to help with anxiety and also enhance the senses. Regular use of patchouli oil will keep you peaceful and calm. Here are some of the benefits to this oil:

1) Patchoulis fragrance also appeals to the soul and touches the mind directly. You will often find it used in perfumes and incenses.
2) The oil can also be used for massages and aromatherapy. Patchouli oil massages stimulate and relax the mind and relax the nerves.
3) Patchouli can really help people with depression.
4) Patchouli also has many healing properties.
5) The oil can help prevent infections from getting worse.
6) It is also known to have helped people with dermatitis and eczema and psoriasis.
7) The oil also has anti- aging properties.
8) The oil helps you looking young and healthy!
9) Also patchouli has been known to help acne scarring, dry skin and wrinkles.

Overall, my favorite thing about the oil has to be the way it makes me feel after I have put it on. It takes me to my favorite happy place, somewhere in the hills around my house surrounded by a redwoods. I love that the scent feels somewhat earthy and fresh. There are so many different essential oils and I feel there is one for everyone. There is something extremely spiritual about smelling and choosing an essential oil. The oil you choose will no doubt become a part apart of your life.

Here is a little more history on Patchouli oil:

Patchouli has been around for literally ages. Over the years people have discovered many uses of the oil, ranging from medical uses to cosmetics. The popularity of patchouli reached its peak during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Patchouli originates from southeast Asia and the herb grows wild in Sumatra and Java at an altitude of 3,000 feet. However, the cultivation of the herb is extensive in lower tropical jungles. The plant grows to be three feet tall and has a very strong stem with little hairy leaves. To extract the oil the plant is harvested two times a year, sometimes three. The best oil quality is considered to extracted during the rainy season. The process of the extraction involves hand picking the leaves, bailing the leaves, and then followed by draining in the shade. Afterwards, a few days of fermentation is needed. Then the oil is extraxted through steam disillation process. Patchouli is one of the rare essential oils that actually gets better with age! As the oil ages into a deep amber from a light yellow, the fragrance becomes smoother and richer. Patchouli over the years has been used for insect repellant as well as in cosmetics.

4 Types of Honey Masks to Try at Home

Honey masks are not only amazing for your skin but also all natural! Here are four different types of honey masks to try with different skin types :

1- Honey face mask for acne-prone skin

•3 teaspoons raw honey

•1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

Mix honey and cinnamon together, and apply to your face. Leave the mask on for 10-30 minutes. The antibacterial properties of both honey and cinnamon are especially beneficial for acne-prone skin.

2- Honey face mask for dry skin

•1 teaspoon mashed avocado

•1 teaspoon plain whole milk yogurt

•1 teaspoon honey

Mix ingredients in a small bowl until smooth. Spread the mixture over your face and let it sit for 20-30 minutes before washing it off. The fats in the avocado and whole milk yogurt are deeply moisturizing to the skin, while the lactic acid in the yogurt smooths your skin, refines pores, and stimulates collagen production.

3- Honey mask for sensitive skin

•2 teaspoon of raw honey

•1 teaspoon aloe Vera gel

Stir the aloe and honey together and apply over your face. Leave it on for about 10-20 minutes. Aloe soothes inflammation and calms your skin, perfect for those with sensitive, irritated skin.

4- Honey mask for scars and dark spots

•2 teaspoon of raw honey

•1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Combine the lemon juice and honey, and apply the mixture to your face. Allow it to sit for 20-30 minutes. Lemon juice exfoliates your skin, brightens dark spots and fades scars. Your skin will feel smooth and soft right away, but it may take a few applications to notice a real difference in scars and spots.

The Wonderful World of Make Up Aveda Style

Even though I am Alpha Esti student, I am not a total beginner to make up application.

I have some previous theatrical experience applying make up for the stage as well as photo shoots. During the intro phase I remember the first time we had partners and ventured into the intimidating task of applying make up on each other. I remember thinking “I got this”, but I found out that in reality, I did not!

After many layers of foundation, contour, blush, and blue eyeshadow, I stepped back and to my horror I realized I had done a convincing job at making my poor partner a characture right out of the Nutcracker Ballet!

When looking at Aveda make up the word that comes to mind is… SUBTLE.

Natural is the theme here. “To enhance and create a freshness, a pleasant face to look at” (Wise words spoken by our incredibly wonderful alpha make up educator Shawn Peltier). In other words, no need to be seen all the way to the back of the theater.

One of my guest came in for a make up service, she wanted a glamourous evening look, but she loved the natural look of Aveda eye shadows. Because it was her wedding anniversary, she wanted to surprise her husband as she does not usually wear make up. I was able to successfully apply my experience of flair and little bit of “drama” to create the exact look she wanted.

4 Benefits from Lymphatic Massage

I have recently just learned to do the lymphatic massage. Not only did I learn how to give the massage, but I also learned how it works and how beneficial it is for the body. Lymphatic massage helps to remove the waste and detoxifies the body.

Lymphatic massage also helps with:

1) healing after surgery which regenerates the tissue to reduce scarring at surgical incision sites.

2) breast feeding because the lymph drainage massage can help to reduce the swelling of engorgement and ameliorate plugged ducts. Fixing these two problems can reduce soreness in the breasts and nipples, ultimately leading to better breastfeeding.

3) improved immune system. They state that lymph drainage massages can improve the function of the immune system and increase the production of antibodies that fight off infections. Lymph drainage massages can also reduce inflammation in the body that causes diseases such as arthritis.

4) relaxation- Lymph drainage massages can be especially relaxing because they can reduce pain levels in the body.

So not only our the benefits great for you but it also feels good!

DIY Dry Shampoo

sgnvhRa9IsYXaPhOLrk8scxlZpk-2japkoqgjzkwmAwIngredients you’ll need to make this DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe:

For light hair:

* Corn Starch

* Baking Soda

* Essential Oil (optional, provides scent)

* Empty Salt Shaker

For dark hair:

* Cocoa Powder

* Corn Starch

* Essential Oil (optional, provides scent)

* Empty Salt Shaker

To make dry shampoo for light hair:

Combine 1/2 cup of corn starch with 2 table spoons of baking soda. It’s true that you could just use corn starch on its own, but baking powder absorbs the scent of the corn starch. If you aren’t concerned with the scent of corn starch, you can omit the use of the baking powder. Add a few drops of essential oil of your choice. I used peppermint because it’s my favorite, and I wanted to smell fresh. I love it.

To make dry shampoo for dark hair:

Combine 1/2 cup of cocoa powder with 2 tablespoons of corn starch. Just as with the last one, you can add essential oil if desired. But this one has a great chocolate-y scent when left alone. I love it!

To use the wonderful dry shampoo you’ve just made, you only have to sprinkle some onto the root of your hair, where you want to freshen it up. After about a day or two, my hair starts to look a little limp as it gets more and more oily. I use dry shampoo in between washes to keep the volume in my hair that I love to see.

Sprinkle it in the desired area, and use the same motions you use when actually shampooing for best results. When used correctly, dry shampoo absorbs oil and gives volume. Give it a try!

How to Create Boho Curls

unz2L4hUXnwSzCcGK4oxa376p9YCejlC01BvZYgYFVMThe point of Boho curls is to accomplish a style that looks very lived-in rather messy. Surprisingly, achieving a lived-in look requires a fair amount of work!

First, prep your hair with the products and tools listed above. After drying your hair completely, section your hair and prepare to curl it with your hot tool of choice.

If you’re using a Marcel Iron/Wand:

I would suggest wrapping your hair around the barrel, as you would with a wand. Alternate the directions you curl the hair to add a more natural look.

If you’re using a flat iron:

I would suggest using a wand or a Marcel iron. Flat iron curls take a lot of patience and practice. However, if you insist on using one, use it as follows:

After you’ve curled your entire head, let your curls cool. Set them with some hair spray and then lightly brush through the curls.

Finish your style with a little sea salt spray, if you’ve got some, and off you go! Below are some great tools for prepping your hair:

* Aveda Pure Abundance Style PrepKJDU22cDFW183QQ3WoUMMLQX7Hm15Z1MwNZRpZt6xdM

* Aveda Phomollient

* Blow Dryer

* Round Brush

Tools needed for styling your hair:

* A hot tool used for curl forming, such as:

* Marcel Iron

* Flat Iron

* Curling Wand

* Sea Salt Spray (optional)

5 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Rushing off to your Salon

Fb305E_UURjZdMjedUDCfd2Dc0V04sF68ltqCEqVGvMIt is easy to look at a picture of the hottest celebrity hair styles and think “huh! I could pull that off!” and run quickly to the nearest salon and have your hair either hacked off, or colored into oblivion. Before you do that, (and you should!), you should ask yourself these five questions:

1.) “Is this something I plan on maintaining?”

Shorter hairstyles require more frequent trims to keep the style fresh, and the same can be said for a more dramatic color. If you have dark hair, is going platinum something you want to maintain when you start to see new growth?

2.) “Is this something I can afford to maintain?”

A color drastically different from that of your natural color is one that is difficult, and often expensive to maintain. That’s why you have to make sure it’s a change you can afford to keep up. Going platinum when your hair is naturally dark brown is going to result in high upkeep, and usually, a fairly high price tag. The same can be said of going darker when you naturally have very light hair.

3.) “What will this look like as it grows out?”

Is this style or color going to be something you’re comfortable with as it grows out, if you choose not to maintain it?

4.) “Will this style work with my natural texture?”

If it does, great! If it doesn’t, are you willing to style it frequently so that it does?

5.) “Does this style require daily styling?”

Some shorter or more dramatic hairstyles have to be heat styled daily. They often require more than just the daily dose of styling products. If you plan on doing that every morning before work, awesome! However, if it is something you don’t think you’ll have time or patience for, perhaps pick something of a lower level of maintenance.

These are the same questions I ask clients who come to me asking for a drastic change. When your stylist asks you these questions, don’t think they’re trying to talk you out of doing something fun! Just know that they want to make sure you’re up to the challenge of having awesome hair.

4 Skin Types and the Products that Fit Them

Treatments for skin ranges due to the different skin types. Knowing your skin type will help determine the correct products and treatments necessary. There are only four different skin types: dry, oily, combination and normal.

Dry skin is characterized by small to no pores, superficial lines and minimal acne. Treatments for dry skin include humectant ingredients, and should include regular exfoliation. Dry skin can also be sensitive to certain products, ingredients and treatments. This means extra care needs to be taken when considering less abrasive products and treatments as to not irritate the skin.

Oily skin is characterized by larger pores, overly active sebaceous ducts, and acne prone. It is best for people with oily skin to use more soluble products such as salicylic acid, and should use gel or foam when choosing cleansers. Those with oily skin generally have lower pH levels, so it is best to find products that balance it. They should also wash regularly because of their higher predisposition to bacteria growth.

Combination skin is characterized by oily skin conditions in the forehead and nose region, and dryer condition on the cheeks and chin. It is the most common skin type, and is best to find products that balance it. Use a cream cleanser if you are going to use a salicylic acid treatment. Those with combination skin should choose between either stronger exfoliants or frequency of use.

Normal skin is neither oily nor dry. They have normal pore size and regular oil production. Product and treatments should be used to maintain the acid mantle because it is typically at ideal levels. Those with normal skin should be more concerned with maintaining, instead of trying to fix different levels through treatments and products. So one of the larger concerns for normal skin is irritating it through more harsh treatments when not needed.
