3 ways to apply Aveda’s Beautifying Oil

beautifying_oil (2)Before Attending Cinta-Aveda Institute, I used a variety of different brands and products to remove my makeup. I started using Vaseline and a makeup removing cleanser from Nu Skin then I switched to Neutrogena oil free makeup remover and cleansing wipes and then, I switched to Garnier Fructis makeup wipes. Some of those products dried out my skin or some did not fully remove my makeup, especially around the eyes.

When I began learning about Aveda’s products in my intro class and we started performing facials on one another, I fell in love with Aveda’s beautifying oil because it was the perfect makeup remover. It literally removes everything including waterproof mascara. It has worked better than any of the other products I’ve listed above and is also very versatile. You can use it as a makeup remover for the entire face. It can also be used as a pre-cleanse and massage oil.

When using Aveda Beautifying Oil, I recommend these three ways to apply the product:

1) use a wet cotton rounds and apply a moderate amount of the beautifying oil to the cotton rounds
2) begin removing foundation or powder from the face by first weting your face
3) then apply the beautifying oil and proceed with an Aveda cleanser of your choice. I prefer the All Sensitive Cleanser or the Botanical Kinetics Cream Cleanser.

Some other additional ways that I use the beautifying oil are to add moisture to my scalp and the ends of my hair before I take a shower. Did I also mention that it smells fantastic? The balanced aroma consists of lavender, rosemary and bergamot. Other great ingredients include organic soybean oil, organic olive oil and organic safflower oil. This product also relieves dryness, restores moisture, and leaves the skin feeling soft and supple. We sell this amazing item in our experience center for $30, however if you are a student you can use your discount to try it out. Have fun giving it a try!

What’s not to love about Control Force Firm Hair Spray?

aveda control sprayI’ve always had a problem with hair spray. It’s usually flaky, never holds my style or smells bad. But, Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hairspray provides maximum hold, control, 24-hour humidity resistance, with a net zero impact on the environment and above all, smells good.

I absolutely love that with this product I can still brush through hair. The hair keep its style, doesn’t flake, and keeps a nice strong hold. No matter if you have curly hair, straight, or wavy, Control Force is a great way to keep your style looking great and lasting longer. The spray also helps fight frizz and prevent static with a fast drying flake resistant formula.

It is best to apply this product about 10 inches from your hair and try not to stay in one spot for too long. Once again, you won’t regret investing in this prodcut–it’s optimized sprayer provides a fine mist and ensures a controlled application.

Top Products To Use For Getting the Perfect Pomp

Pompadour Poof haircutThe pompadour has definitely made a comeback in the last couple of years and it requires products that are going to provide a lot of support and hold.

The first product you want to use is Aveda Men’s pomade, which is the most essential. Once the wet hair is blow-dried to a state of 100% dryness, take a healthy scoop of pomade with one finger and run through the hair in all directions until the pomade is evenly distributed. The hair is now ready to be sculpted into the pomp shape by using any grooming comb.

For extra flatness on the sides, another great product I recommend is to use Aveda Control Paste. It is dime-sized to help literally paste the hair flat.

To finish your perfect pomp, I then recommend spraying Aveda Air Control all over to set the hair.

The relationship of these three products is seamless when executing this style not just functionally, but also aromatically, providing a fresh scent of spearmint and leaving the client feeling ready to go.

Men’s Hair Care

Aveda's Men's Care Products

Let’s face it, most men are clueless, when it comes to anything beauty or hair-related.

So here are some useful tips and tricks that every guy should have in his hair care arsenal. These are the products you need, fellas!

The first product you need is a good daily shampoo. The Aveda Men’s Pure-Formance Shampoo is great for daily use to exfoliate your scalp and keep it healthy and flake-free. It is infused with 100 percent naturally derived walnut shells and jojoba beads.

The next product you need is a conditioner and you can pair your shampoo with the Aveda Men’s Pure-Formance Conditioner to keep your hair soft and moisturized. This conditioner is proven by 72 percent of users to leave your hair feeling less greasy and oily. 62 percent of people have also found that it leaves their scalp feeling less irritable and itchy.

Now on to styling. I have two favorite products when it comes to Men’s styling, Control Paste and Brilliant Humectant Pomade. Before deciding on the right styling product for you, assess your needs. Do you like to accentuate your curls, smooth out frizz, have strong hold, or use a product that’s light and flexible? The Brilliant Humectant Pomade is great for curly hair or defining your style and adding shine, while the Control Paste is perfect for all hair types and has a matte finish with a strong but natural looking hold.

Enbrightenment for Skin Lightening and Hyperpigmentation

Aveda Enbrightenment Skincare Line of Products

I love Aveda’s Enbrightenment line simply for the way it feels! Not only does this line of products leave your skin feeling great; it brightens the skin, helping to even out the tone and fade dark spots. The cleanser is amazing. It’s creamy and non-stripping, leaving skin feeling moisturized and hydrated. The toner is just as wonderful. It’s alcohol free and hydrating, prepping the skin for the correcting serum and moisturizing lotion or cream. Though both the lotion and cream moisturize the skin without being too oily, the cream is a bit heavier: best for those with drier skin.

As a budding esthetician, and a lover of this line, I had to investigate the ingredients to see what makes these products rich and creamy while brightening the skin. Aloe barbadensis leaf is known for its healing benefits, and it is the first ingredient in all of the products in the line. In addition to aloe, featured ingredients include caprylic triglycerides, shea butter, and rice bran oil, helping to make this line feel silky, while moisturizing and nourishing your skin. Because they are brightening products, I expected to see familiar lightening ingredients like kojic acid, licorice root or glycolic acid, but I didn’t. Instead, there were ingredients that I wasn’t familiar with such as genetian root extract, mulberry leaf, and aphyllum nodsum leaf extract. I decided to go to the Aveda website to see if they were the active skin brightening ingredients. This is what they had to say:

100% naturally derived Plant-Powered Brightening Blend including Ascorbyl Glucoside (a vitamin C derivative), mulberry root, and grape extracts to help diminish the appearance of discoloration and dark spots.

Salicylic Acid and Glucosamine help promote surface cell turnover.

A soothing aroma made predominantly with organic lavender, sustainably sourced sandalwood, organic rose geranium and organic rosemary essential oils also helps soothe and calm the skin.

Step 3 in the enbrightenment skin care system which is clinically proven to improve skin’s clarity by 52% and diminish the appearance of dark spots by 34%

Beta-Hydroxy Acid (Salicylic Acid)

Salicylic acid exfoliates skin and can improve its texture and color. It also helps with acne.

Sounds great right?! But do these ingredients alone help to lighten the skin? Are they effective in lightening all types of hyperpigmentation? And how do they compare to other types of lightening agents and methods?

Before beginning a skin lightening regime, it’s important to know the cause of discoloration, and the best way to treat it. There are many things to consider. Choosing natural versus synthetic ingredients may effect the amount of time you need to use the product before seeing results, or the type of results you should expect to see with prolonged use. You also need to consider the complimentary care you’ll need in order to maintain the results. Finally, you need to be aware of contraindications, or possible allergies to certain ingredients.

Hyperpigmentation

Being natural, the ingredients in the “brightening blend” gently help to even out skin tone, fading dark spots—hyperpigmentation—caused by sun damage. The Enbrightenment line may not be beneficial for other forms of hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage can appear in a number of ways: lentigenes, chloasma, and melasma.

Solar lentigenes are small yellow-brown spots caused by exposure to the sun. Chloasma, also called liver spots, is increased pigmentation from sun exposure or from other causes. Melasma, a type of chloasma, is triggered by hormones often occurring during pregnancy or because of the use of birth control. It appears on the face during pregnancy. It usually fades over time, but is worsened with sun exposure. It is also said to be more prevalent in men and women of Native American descent (on the forearms) and in men and women of German or Russian Jewish descent (on the face).

Solar-caused hyperpigmentation usually effects the top layers of the epidermis and can be effectively treated with natural ingredients. However if the damage is deep and effects the dermis, more aggressive treatment may be necessary. Lasers, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and ingredients like hydroquinone may be used when seeking more aggressive treatments.

A Closer Look at Aveda’s Ingredients

Ascorbyl glucoside, a stable form of vitamin C, is made by combining vitamin C with glucose. It is an antioxidant and, when applied on the skin, it breaks down into L-ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C) which has powerful antioxidant properties and inhibits the synthesis of melanin.

Mulberry leaf extract is a tyrosinase inhibitor which aids in reducing melanin production. It’s non-irritating to the skin, and works best in combination with other skin lighteners.

Grape seed extract is effective in lightening skin pigmentation due to UV radiation. Taking grape seed extract internally is also effective in reducing hyper pigmentation due to melasma when taken for 6 months.

Salicylic acid exfoliates the skin, helping to promote greater skin clarity and luminosity.

Beta hydroxy acids are less irritating than alpha-hydroxy acids, yet have similar results in improving skin texture and color. However, people who are allergic to salycylates (found in aspirin) should not use products containing salicylic acid. Salicylic acid can be absorbed into the bloodstream and may cause an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis. Pregnant or nursing women should not use products containing salicylic acid.

Other great ingredients in the Enbrightenment line that help to reduce hyper pigmentation are ascophyllum nodsum extract and aloe vera. Ascophyllum nodosum extract, a seaweed, actively reduces melanin synthesis and pigmentation of synthesized melanins. It also eliminates the pigmented scales. It offers anti-radical protection against aging of skin.

Aleosin, is a C-glucosylated 5-methylchromone, a component of the aloe vera plant. It is a naturally mild tyrosinase inhibitor, with no cytotoxicity recorded. It is best combined with other ingredients, due to its hydrophilic (has an affinity for water) nature.

It may take up to eight weeks, or several months of regular use, before seeing results. However, your complexion will look dewy, hydrated and have a noticeable glow and brightness immediately after first use. For added results, using the Enbrightenment Intensive Massage Masque once every two weeks boost the effects of the line. To maintain results, use a moisturizer with SPF to protect your skin from the sun and reoccurring hyperpigmentation.

Like I said, this line is amazing! I highly recommend it.

My Outer Peace Experience

The Story

At the age of seven, I can remember being mesmerized watching my father wash his face and apply hydrating cream. It was our first bonding moment that I can remember, and what started me in my love for skincare.

Then, like the majority of us, at age of 15 I started having basic teenage acne. What did I do? I hopped on the Proactive wagon and it worked perfectly for me. It cleared everything up. I was an excellent candidate for Proactive because my face produced so much oil that I had no drying and could use the entire system flawlessly.

Aveda Outer Peace Line

The Challenge

As I got older, I felt that I had outgrown the acne stage of my life because of the significant decrease in breakouts. I began researching different products that I should be using for cleansing and I wanted to incorporate some anti-aging products as well. I began toying with other products, getting samples and so on. But the challenge was that the products all caused me to have massive breakouts. This reaction made me think…hmmm…I still have acne.

The Answer

After some education on my skin type and how excessive oily skin works, I tried Aveda’s Outer Peace line. I was not disappointed. In three weeks, my oil production decreased and my skin looked better than it ever had-even when I was using Proactive. When using Proactive, I tended to have somce redness to my skin, and that went away with the Outer Peace product.

I rarely break out, and when I do, it is most often due to the food I have eaten. Did I mention that the smell is amazing?

Why Tone? Not Talking at the Gym!

The most frequently asked questions after a facial are “Why should I use toner?” or “What does toner even do?” Toner is your skin’s newest best friend, ladies and gentlemen. Once you get close to toner you will never let her go! People who use toner swear by it!

So you’ve already got your skin care routine: wash, dry, done. On occasion, you might put moisturizer on if your skin feels dry. But that’s about it, right? Well, think of toner as the second step to your cleansing routine. Adding toner to your regimen can easily help you with any dryness or over oiliness. When you think toner think of this key word: “balance”.

Here’s a little “Toner 101” to get us started. Everyone’s skin has an acid mantle made from sweat and oil that is naturally produced all day and night. We often strip away at the acid mantle when we cleanse the skin, changing the balance of the skin’s pH. Using a toner helps bring your skin back to the natural, perfect combo where oily meets dry!

Toner is also like a huge drink of water for your skin. Take a look at your skin up close in a mirror for a moment. Give a little push on your nose with your finger. Do you see lines? How about on your forehead? Yep! Your skin’s dehydrated! It’s okay, no need to worry. About 99.9% of people have dehydrated skin. Toner helps drench your skin with hydration.

When choosing a toner, you want one that is going to work with your skin. If your skin is dry, you will want a moisture-rich toner. Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics Skin Firming/Toning Agent is perfectly suited for people with aged or drying skin. It cools and hydrates the skin. It is also a spray bottle toner so you can keep it in your purse and refresh your face all day long with a simple spritz. If you wear makeup, there’s no need to worry: spray right over it! The toner will set your makeup and give a nice, clean refreshing splash of confidence!

If you have an oily skin type, you will want to choose a toner like Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics Toning Mist. It helps minimize oil buildup on the skin. It’s a mild astringent, so it won’t over-dry your skin. Once again, it’s all about helping keep the perfect balance without stripping the skin of its natural healthy oils.

The Aroma Sensory Journey

Woman getting head massage.

As an Alpha Esti student performing elemental nature facials, my guests will often comment on how good everything smells. I agree, and I believe that the aroma-therapeutic benefit of an Aveda facial makes for an exceptional sensory experience.

Some of Aveda’s signature aromas are highlighted in The Botanical Kinetics line.

The toning mist and the Botanical Kinetics skin firming/toning agent both contain a calming aroma featuring rosewater.

The Botanical Kinetics liquid exfoliant is enhanced with soothing and familiar aromas of Lavender extract, Witch Hazel extract, Chamomile extract, and Melissa Officinalis (Balm Mint) extract.

While the use of essential oils are becoming more widely recognized as therapeutic, plant and flower extracts have always been an integral part of Ayurvedic healing practices. According to Ayurvedic traditions, there are essential oils that benefit each elemental nature type:

  • Infinity/air: Typically susceptible to dry skin, anxiety, and hypersensitivity. Avoid sharp or strongly perfumed essential oils. Use warm, energizing oils such as camphor, cinnamon, and cypress; combined with the stabilizing, calming oils such as sandalwood, jasmine, or rose; blended in sesame oil, as a carrier oil.
  • Fire: Prone to inflammatory skin diseases; would benefit from cooling, calming oils; flowery fragrances such as gardenia, jasmine, mint, rose, or sandalwood blended in a cooling carrier like coconut oil.
  • Water/Earth: Typically oily or combo skin types; would benefit from warm, light, stimulating oils such as sage, basil, cedar, pine, myrrh in very light carrier oils.

Over centuries and across cultures, the belief holds that essential oils have the ability to advance wellness, enhance product efficacy, and bring a deeply relaxing sensory experience.

Treating Rosacea with Aveda

Suffers of rosacea know that it can be tricky finding the right products to calm inflammation and reduce redness. Though the cause of rosacea is unknown, it is treatable. At Aveda, we take a synergetic approach to healing and relieving the effects of skin conditions such as rosacea. Our customizable services, treatments, and products address imbalances in a person’s “elemental nature.”

Aveda, steeped in the wisdom of Ayurveda, not only treats the skin topically, but internally. This holistic approach brings the mind, body, and spirit into balance. We do this by coming to understand a person’s “elemental nature”—an imbalance in their constitution based on the elements, similar to doshas in Ayurveda. The elements fire, earth, ether, water, and air are expressed as:

  • Fire: Sensitive, inflamed, irritated skin.
  • Water/Earth: Oily, combination skin.
  • Infinity/Air: Dry, dehydrated, combination skin.

When the skin is out of balance, it may exhibit any of the above traits. Rosacea, being “fire”, is characterized by dilation of blood vessels; redness; and dry, sensitive skin, that may sting or burn, on the nose and cheeks. It appears in adults over thirty. If severe, it is accompanied by papules and pustules. And, in rare cases, rosacea that is not treated may cause permanent effects, such as thickening of the skin or loss of vision. It may also cause knobby bumps on the nose, called rhinophyma. Over time, it can give the nose a swollen, waxy look. But most cases of rosacea don’t progress this far.

Aveda brings rosacea into balance in several ways: products, treatments, helpful tips, and recommendations. Aveda’s sensitive line is a great first step to balancing the condition. It has caprylic triglycerides, jojoba, and soy bean oils that leave the skin feeling moisturized without an oily feeling. And it doesn’t have essential oils and fragrances that may irritate the skin. Because rosacea’s elemental nature is fire, removing the product with a cool cloth is recommended.

The deep herbal cleansing clay mask blended with a liquid exfoliant should be used once or twice a month as a gentle refinement. It has herbal extracts of marshmallow root, and red clover leaf in the mask help to sooth and balance skin, while the kaolin clay—the gentlest clay that is good for all skin types—adds minerals to the skin while tightening pores. The liquid exfoliant gently removes dead cells helping to soften skin.

If the skin is very inflamed and irritated, I recommend using Aveda comforting tea as a cool compress daily to help reduce heat and irritation before applying the refinement mask. It contains licorice root that soothes and brightens the skin, helping to even out tone, while reducing redness. It also contains cooling peppermint, which calms inflammation. And, of course, enjoying a cup at home, or after each service, is a relaxing way to help bring down inflammation internally.

Which leads us to addressing external ways of bringing down inflammation.

While applying the compress, recommend that your client avoid spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeine, as these things may trigger inflammation. And if they are finding avoiding these things difficult to do, suggest that they keep them to a minimum.

Stress may also trigger rosacea. In the spa, we take our guest on Aveda’s signature “aroma sensory journey,” inviting our guest to enjoy fragrant essential oils, bringing them into a state of relaxation. Your guest may repeat this at home. We offer single note essential oils that may be inhaled directly from the bottle or in the palm of their hand. The single note is blended with oil and can be worn as perfume, worn on skin or in hair, added to other Aveda products, or added to a bath.

As estheticians, using the balancing infusion oil for sensitive skin and the cooling treatment mask is the way to go. Use the balancing oil before the treatment mask to boost its effect. The oat, chamomile, and calendula extracts, along with the borage, sunflower oils, and lecithin, help to heal and nourish the skin. The balancing oil balances the skin, preparing it for the cooling mask, helping it to reduce inflammation. At home, however, if the client isn’t applying a mask, suggest they apply the balancing oil before using the comforting tea cooling compress.

The cooling mask is a combination of the herbal science remedy, a blend of millet seed flour, oat kernel flour, and lavender, combined with the intensive hydrating mask. The main ingredient is aloe. It is an amazing treatment mask that reduces inflammation and redness instantly. If their rosacea isn’t severe and they aren’t experiencing sensitives, the addition of Aveda’s lavender single note intensifies the masks effectiveness. The herbal science remedy isn’t sold to the public. To achieve similar results at home, suggest that they use the intensive hydrating mask. It is gentle enough to allow for daily use, or to use as an overnight treatment, until their inflammation subsides.

If their rosacea isn’t severe and they have no essential oil senstivities, the Enbrightenment line is amazing. It has a number of herbal extracts, and vegetable and essential oils that are known for relieving inflammation, exfoliating the skin, evening out tone, and moisturizing the skin. This line has no alcohol, which is great for those with rosacea, as alcohol may irritate the skin. Be mindful though that the Enbrightenment has salicylic acid and, if the rosacea is irritated, this can aggravate the condition.

Many people have combination skin and, if the person has rosacea with other skin conditions, the treatment and recommendations have to be customized. The use of steam or heat during facials should be minimized or avoided altogether when treating clients with fire elemental natures. Remind your client of this when they are caring for their skin at home.

Whether in the spa or at home, treating rosacea is made easy with Aveda.

Wellness with Lavender Essential Oils

In my esthetician program, during the intro phase, I was first introduced to essential oils and how the body reacts to them. At the beginning of the day, we would always start off with wellness, with a guided meditation to put us in a positive mood.

Wellness generally means a healthy balance of the mind, body, and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being. Aveda is centered around Ayurveda which is an ancient holistic system of healing that strives to create balance in body, mind, and spirit, which is something I like most about Aveda. Not only are you using the best products but there is a greater balance within them.

I had never done any type of meditation to bring myself into a healthy balance, but I have seen how much it helps in my daily life. I continue to do guided meditations with essential oils at home.

One of my favorite oils to use on myself is Aveda’s essential oil in lavender. I notice most of my clients choose that scent as well during their treatment. Lavender essential oil has a fresh, sweet, floral aroma that is soothing and refreshing. Lavender is an adaptogen, which is a unique group of herbal ingredients to help improve health, and therefore can assist the body when adapting to stress or imbalances. Not only does it help to relax the body and mind but it is also soothing for the skin.

I highly recommend, when you come in to a get a facial, that you choose the lavender essential oil to relax and de-stress during your treatment!

Lip Saver

Aveda Lip Saver

One of my favorite products at Aveda is Lip Saver. It’s a wonderful product packed full of natural ingredients like castor, jojoba, and sunflower oils; and shea butter. They help heal and sooth your lips. I’ve used a number of lip balms, like Sugar by Fresh, Dr. Hauska, and Pangea. They all worked great, but were really expensive. My friends thought I was crazy for spending so much money on lip balms, but I thought they were worth it because my lips were chapped.

Though I’d used Aveda’s hair products, I had never used Aveda’s skin care products until I began attending the Institute. Once I tried Lip Saver, I was amazed! It worked wonders for my lips. It cost way less than the other brands and, in my opinion, worked better. My lips were protected all day with one application.

What makes Lip Saver stand out from the rest is its combination of oils. Castor oil, the first ingredient, is one of the strongest ingredients for healing chapped lips. It is rich in Vitamin E, antioxidants, and minerals that boost skin health. It also contains triglyceride fatty acids that are known for their antiviral and antibacterial properties. Triglycerides are helpful to the skin, as they help it to restore its natural moisture balance, keeping the skin moisturized during winter months.

Jojoba oil is a liquid wax containing essentially all wax esters, Vitamin E, and phospholipids. It’s very similar to sebum-the oil that humans secrete to lubricate skin and hair-and can be used to moisturize dry skin. It is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, hypoallergenic, non-toxic and non-comedogenic.

Sunflower oil, high in beta-carotin (a source of retinol-Vitamin A), protects the skin from wrinkles, fine lines, and sunburns. The antioxidants in beta-carotin help prevent premature aging caused by exposure to the sun by neutralizing free radicals.

Shea Butter has an exceptionally large “healing fraction,” setting it apart from other oils and butters. The healing fraction contains important nutrients, vitamins, and other valuable phytonutrients required for healing. Because Shea Butter has a large healing fraction, and moisturizing fraction, regular use of this natural oil can treat many skin problems, including blemishes, wrinkles, itching, sunburns, small skin wounds, eczema, skin allergies, insect bites, frost bite, and other skin conditions. It is because of these unique healing properties that the Shea tree got its name, the Karite tree, which means the Tree of Life.

I recommend Lip Saver to all my clients, and have found they are as happy with it as I am.

Styling: Is it Necessary to Use Product?

The answer to that is yes! Product is everything. It can be the difference between beautiful soft locks and a boring frumpy do.

Some people think that if they don’t heat-style their hair, it means that they don’t need to use products. But that is definitely a myth! This doesn’t mean you have to go to the store and buy 15 different products for each hairstyle—there are a few products that are great for any hair type and style!

My go to product for any hair type is the Aveda Dry Remedy Oil. I love this stuff! It’s extremely concentrated, so you only need about two drops on fine hair and three to five on medium to coarser hair. This product can be used on wet or dry hair and helps moisturize, soften, and reduce frizz. It’s great for wash and go or heat-styling.

Another product that I find extremely versatile is Brilliant Damage Control. It is a light-weight product that comes in a mist form. It’s used as a heat protectant, detangler, and helps protect your hair from damage due to UV rays. You can apply this product on towel-dried hair.

The last product that I’m going to touch on is the Light Elements Defining Whip. Defining Whip is for dry hair only and is a great way to finish your style. Whether you have air-dried your hair and want to seal your natural wave or curl, or you have just blow-dried your hair sleek and straight, this is the product to use! Its mousse-like qualities provide the perfect smooth finish to conceal frizz and fly-aways without weighing your hair down.

My Beauty Routine Pre- and Post-Aveda

Before I began my program, I prided myself on my great beauty routine. I thought I had the perfect combination of products to make my skin look its best.

Then I started Cinta Aveda. I learned that cleansing your face twice a day, applying astringent, and moisturizing in the morning was just the tip of a huge expensive iceberg of skin care products.

During intro I learned the importance of applying a primer to the skin before makeup so the makeup doesn’t absorb into the skin. Then I added a hair oil to help combat frizz. Then there’s a specialized conditioner just for my hair type. Of course, no beauty routine is complete without two forms of exfoliation—chemical and mechanical—so there goes two more products added to my over flowing bathroom. Eye cream is a necessity for everyone, so next that was added. Then there’s a specialized concealer for my dark under-eye circles.

But what should I use to apply that concealer? So I added a fancy extra-fluffy concealer brush. And cleansers—no you can’t just have one, you need three—one for the morning, one for the night, and one to spit treat those problem pimples.

In conclusion, my products went from fitting in a small makeup bag to needing their own shelf in my bathroom.Still from How to Marry a Millionaire: Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe at a Dressing Table, while Lauren Bacall stands nearby.

Product Review: Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics Exfoliant

You may be cleansing, moisturizing, and using sunscreen. But if you’re not exfoliating, your skin isn’t as healthy as is could be.

When you exfoliate your skin, you are removing the dead skin cells that are lying on your skin’s surface. As we age, the process of cell turnover slows down, which means that the body is slower in shedding old surface skin cells to generate new ones. When you don’t exfoliate, old skin cells on the surface leave your skin looking dull, rough, and dry, and can result in excess oil and clogged pores, which, in turn, leads to blemishes and acne.

Exfoliation can be performed mechanically, by using abrasive scrubs or brushes such as the Clarisonic. Or exfoliation can be performed chemically by using cleaners, toners, and scrubs. These chemical exfoliants contain special kinds of acids that dissolve and remove the dead skin cells without scrubbing.

Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics Exfoliant is a chemical exfoliant. It is a non-abrasive liquid that wipes away dead skin cells. When using this exfoliant, you will notice that it leaves the skin looking soft, smooth, and supple, and gives the skin a healthy glow!

One of the main ingredients is salicylic acid which is naturally derived. Therefore, it is not drying to the skin. It also has properties of lavender, which soothes stressed skin and is both refreshing and relaxing to the body and mind.

I would highly recommend this product, since it’s great for people of all skin types to keep your skin younger!

Products That Deposit Color with Every Use

A great way to maintain your hair color, and keep it looking fresh and vibrant, is by using products that deposit color with every use. Each time you use one of these conditioners, it deposits color and tones the hair.

Aveda carries a number of products that work with every color. Black mulva—for black hair, blue malva—for blue tint, camomile—for blondes, clove—for brown hair, and madder root—for red hair.

  • Black Malva deposits dark brown and black cool tones to the hair, this is great for anyone who wants to cancel out any red hues.
  • Blue Malva is similar in the sense that it is also great for anyone who loves cool tones, but this product is a lot lighter. It’s great for blondes with naturally copper-ish hues that prefer cool or natural tones.
  • Camomile is meant for blondes as well, although this conditioner deposits a gorgeous golden tone with organically grown camomile and calendula.
  • Clove enriches warm tones in brown to dark blonde hair.
  • Madder Root can be used on brunettes or red heads and deposits a red hue to the hair. It also deep conditions and leaves the hair feeling softer and more manageable.

These products are the perfect way to keep your hair looking shiny, soft and vibrant in-between each salon visits. They’re also great for anyone who can’t come in every six weeks and likes to spread out their appointments to every eight weeks.

Beautifying Oil: The Hair Superhero

I recently took the plunge and had my hair bleached and colored for the first time. I loved the end result, but I did not love how my hair looked and felt completely fried. It was wiry, brittle, and I had more split ends then ever before!

I tried everything from special conditioners and serums, to coconut oil. Nothing was giving my hair lasting hydration and strength. That is until I tried Aveda Beautifying Oil.

I massaged it into the ends and working it upward toward the roots. Then I left it in for an hour or so before washing it out. Not only did my hair feel and look better, but it smelled amazing.

I knew Beautifying Oil could be used as a makeup remover, massage oil, and skin hydrator, but who knew it could also rescue damaged hair? I now mix Beautifying Oil into my conditioner which makes it smell great and adds extra moisture to my hair. I’ve noticed that I have much softer, stronger, faster-growing hair all thanks to Beautifying Oil!

Another great use for Aveda Beautifying Oil is using it in place of shaving cream. The oil not only makes the razor glide smoother, it also hydrates the skin so there is no need to apply lotion after shaving.

Beautifying Oil has become a beauty staple for me that is a must have whenever I leave the house because of how versatile it is! Aveda, please make more multi-purpose products like Beautifying Oil!

Finding The Right Shampoo For You

There are a couple of questions you want to ask yourself before purchasing any hair care products, including shampoo and conditioner. Ask yourself the same questions that your stylist asks you whenever you go into your salon for a service:

  • Do you ever get scalp irritation or redness?
  • Is your hair color-treated?
  • Do you have dry or damaged hair?
  • Is your hair starting to thin?

These are important to consider before choosing any products. The more you pay attention to your scalp and hair, the better equipped you will be to give yourself exactly what you need to look and feel good!

Here is a list of some of my favorite Aveda shampoos and conditioners, and what they are good for.

  • Pure Abundance: This is the best shampoo and conditioner to use if you have limp hair and want volume. Its clay-based conditioner adds some grip to your hair and helps give it volume when styling.
  • Color Conserve: Color Conserve is pretty self explanatory. This is best for color treated hair so that you can avoid premature fading.
  • Invati: The Invati system reduces hair loss by a third and contains densiplex—a blend of Ayurvedic herbs, including turmeric and ginseng.
  • Damage Remedy: Helps hair that has been damaged by color, chemicals, and heat styling. This product deep conditions the hair with quinoa protein.
  • Smooth Infusion: If you struggle with frizzy hair or fly-aways, this is the shampoo and conditioner for you. It moisturizes, reduces frizz, and softens hair up to sixty percent.
  • Scalp Benefits: This is a balancing shampoo that’s great for anyone who suffers from dandruff or an oily scalp. It provides a deep clean, and removes excess sebum and buildup.

Enbrightenment Correcting Serum

This product contains Aveda’s most highly concentrated, plant-powered, brightening blend to diminish the appearance of dark spots and discoloration on your skin. This product helps promote surface cell turnover for greater skin clarity and luminosity to give your skin the best color and appearance it can possibly have.

It is 100% naturally derived from plants including grape extract, mulberry root, and asorbyl glucoside. These elements help promote surface cell turnover. The aroma was made with organic lavender, sustainable sandalwood, organic rose geranium, and organic rosemary. All these help soothe and calm the skin.

To use this serum, you smooth it onto clean or toned skin in the morning and at night, focusing on discolored areas. It will make the skin feel tighter which is normal. And then you follow the serum with the enbrightening correcting lotion or creme. 52% of those tested saw improvement in clarity and 34% saw the appearance of dark spots diminish.

My personal experience with this product was actually quite amazing. I have tried the serum alone mainly for scarring. My skin has very dark melanin in it, which causes my scars to become a lot darker then normal. They can turn almost black, depending on how bad the blemish is. I have noticed the scarring goes away a lot quicker when I use the product. I would recommend it to anyone that has bad scarring or dark spots on their skin, which are hard to get off.

This product costs $53, so it is on the pricey side. But it’s worth it compared to the amount spent at a dermatologist using lasers or peels on the skin to get rid of dark spots.

Top Three Favorite Skin Care Products

Aveda Embrightenment Ingredients

Since starting school at Cinta Aveda in July, I have learned so much about each line of skin care products they offer and how to use and manipulate on the skin for better outcomes and to increase the radiance of the skin. After using Aveda for a while at school and also at home, I’ve noticed great changes in my skin—it’s much less dull and oily than before. Before Aveda, I used different brands of skin care. I tried so many, but I never really stuck to one. But I’m glad I’ve chosen Cinta Aveda as a school. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have gotten to try all these great natural products.

My top three favorites that I love and recommend are:

  1. Herbal Clay Mask — When you have those ugly blackheads or whiteheads, mix this with a little of the liquid Botanical Kinetics Exfoliant. Microwave that baby up in a bowl for 30 seconds. Mix it and apply on the face. Wait ten minutes and rinse with warm water. Ta-da! Your face and nose looks clean without having to extract.

  2. Tourmaline Charged Exfoliating Cleanser — OMG, I love this mask! It has made my life so

easy! If you get lazy exfoliating, or even to cleanse your face, this one’s for you. It’s basically a two in one. I recommend it for people who needs a little “oomph” of moisture in their dull-ish dry skin (like mine). For this cleanser, you just wet your face with warm water, take a bit of the cleanser on the tips of your fingers, and lather it on your face in a circular motion. Then rinse and pat dry. Follow with a spritz of the Botanical Kinetics Skin Firming Toner. Now it’s all nice and smooth.

  3. Intensive Hydrating Mask — When you need that extra hydration in your skin, this mask is magic. It has aloe vera, so it works great by itself. This mask doesn’t really need heating up, but I do recommend applying a somewhat thick layer. What I particularly like about this one is that you can apply it and sleep with it overnight, then rinse in the morning. When you wake up, your skin will be quenched like you never stayed up late partying.

I have more favorite ones I’d like to talk about, but these are the basics that I feel everyone needs in their home. So I hope you go out and try these babies out!

Real Men Get Facials

Men with facial masks on.

When I offered to give my guy friends’ free facial treatments at school, their responses were, “I’ve never gotten a facial treatment before, how does it feel?” or “Do I need to cleanse my skin before hand?” My answer to them were the same—“It makes you feel cleansed and relaxed, and no, the whole point is that I cleanse your face and give it some pamper.” Yet none of them has actually come in for a free facial treatment.

Guys, I know most of you don’t even have a regular skin care regimen at home to properly cleanse your face. So I recommend you go out there now and find one! You need a cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and maybe an eye cream, too. Why? Just like us women, you’re a human being with skin that can get dry, dull, oily, dehydrated, or for those with combination skin, everything in between.

Then schedule your first-ever facial treatment. There is nothing to be shy or afraid of; it’s really relaxing. A facial treatment is not only deep cleansing for your skin, but we also help you find the right treatment for your skin by analyzing it: is it dry or dull? Does it suffer from inflammation, hyperpigmentation, dehyration, and so forth. After each facial, you’ll see and feel the results—you’ll be amazed, trust me!

If you’re having trouble finding the right skin care regimen, I recommend trying Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics Purifying Crème Cleanser, Botanical Kinetics Skin Firming Toning Mist, and Botanical Kinetics Hydrating Lotion.
