Welcome to Cinta Aveda

Cinta Aveda Institute Student Brushes Hair

Cosmetologists trained at Cinta Aveda Institute are taught the ABC’s of how to convert someone’s worn out hairstyle to a fresh, updated do. We know how to set a perimeter and add interior layers as a secondary move. We go from dropping our combs to making confident artistic calls on someone’s style.

As a super senior here at Cinta Aveda, I’m here to tell those of you newly embarking on this journey that it gets better. It’s human nature to not want to disappoint a fellow human. When they sit in your chair and leave their appearance in your hands, it can be the most nerve-wracking thing. But it can also be the coolest thing.

I won’t lie—there will be that occasional guest who is so particular it discourages you from working on them. I’m here to tell you to take it with a grain of salt and go through with it. It’ll just make every other guest seem that much more enjoyable.

I’ll also discourage you from being quick to decide what you like and what you don’t like. A self-fulfilling prophecy can subconsciously manipulate your thoughts. This is a huge mistake I made early on. I thought I hated color. I swore I liked cuts and only cuts. I would check the appointment books first thing in the morning so that I could brace myself if I had a guest for a color service later that day.

I talked to cosmetology professionals who gave me the best advice, changing my frame of mind about color services. They told me to stop thinking so much about your own dislike and focus your energy instead on the outcome of the service. Don’t count how many foils you have left to fold but instead think about how each pattern in each packet will interact with the next. Focus on how you can change up the weaves and patterns of the foils to create a different outcome for your last guest. Finally, remember that you’re in school. It’s a learning environment and, even if you make a mistake, hair grows and color can be manipulated. Realizing all this made every day at school more enjoyable.

After you graduate, you will most likely seek out an assisting/education program. You’ll get to touch hair, but the chances are that you won’t be doing up to five services a day like you do when you’re at school. So enjoy yourself at Cinta Aveda. Take each guest on as a new learning experience. Don’t focus too much on the negative things; rather focus on what will make you into a better cosmetologist.

And have fun!

Graduation Celebration

CAI Graduation Celebration

I participated in Celebration (aka my graduation). I didn’t think too much about it at time but, looking back and reflecting on the event, I’m so glad I participated in it.

I used my four-year-old son as my model and turned him into a ’50s psychobilly-esque dude. He strutted his stuff down a make-shift runway and got a loud unexpected roar of applause. I then sat him on my lap and listened to the speeches made by fellow soon-to-be graduates.

The types of relationships you build here at Cinta Aveda Institute amaze me. A lot of people go into professional programs with a one-track mind: get in, get out, get a job. You never anticipate the connections you unknowingly make.

The tight-knit community of beauty artists is a very special one. It’s as if there’s this unspoken bond. We all know we’re doing what we do not just to pay the bills but because we love our craft. We all know we have one of the best professions because we remain passionate about our work through our lifetime. I realized this during Celebration. You can tell you’ve joined a great profession when the people you’re supposed to be competing against for jobs are standing right next to you, cheering you on!

Aveda Products in Combination

Aveda Hair Products Collage

When I first started my trial and error journey with Aveda products, I admit to playing the guessing game. Luckily every product had a clear description on how to properly use it.

After a year of playing around with the wide variety of products, I found the perfect “go to” combination. Prepping the hair with some Brilliant Damage Control never hurts; everyone can use a little UV and thermal heat protection. I like to follow with a touch of Phomollient. I find this product helps limp hair hold a springy loose curl while also being beneficial to textured hair that needs to be blown straight. I like to finish with a couple pumps of Light Elements Serum. It smooths and weighs down those pesky flyaways I know everyone gets.

No matter the texture, length, or condition of someone’s hair, I find this combination of products always works for me. It’s definitely not the only combination, but if you ever find yourself stuck in a rut of not knowing which combination of products to use, grab these three and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

But if I had to choose just one product to take with me to a “stranded on an island” situation, I’d take Dry Remedy Oil. Everyone could use a little dry remedy oil, especially if you have chemically treated hair.

It makes your hair feel like it just took a big sip of refreshing water. A great thing about it is that it’s low maintenance. It doesn’t require any sort of styling or heat to work. You apply it as needed throughout the day to damp, dry, or even style hair. It also works when the wind trashes your hair. Sprinkle a few drops into the palm of your hands and gently glaze over that wind-induced frizz.

For those of you who don’t have chemically treated hair, you also can make use of this product. Textured hair, coarse hair, graying hair—throw this tiny travel-sized vial into your bag and run some through your hair when it needs some freshening. Did I mention that it smells pretty darn good too?

After applying, don’t be too hasty to wipe your hands clean. I personally like to let those natural oils hydrate my hands as well.

Men are Vain

Aveda’s Invati Product Line

Aveda’s Invati Product Line

So I’ve come to realize that men are actually quite vain. It’s incredible the lengths a man might go if he fears he’s going bald, either to cover up a receding hairline or try to avoid it altogether.

Time to blast someone I hold near and dear to my heart—let’s call him Bob (sorry, Bob). Bob is a pretty confident guy except that he started showing a receding hairline before he was 21. He wore hats or shaved his head down to a #1 guard (about ⅛″). He would seek my advice on different haircuts or obscure Eastern home remedies.

One day, I suggested this new Aveda product line called Invati. I tell Bob it’s a commitment, but a worthwhile one. He agrees to give it a shot. I bring home the Invati shampoo, conditioner, and spray scalp supplement. It took a few months of daily use, but then even I start to see a noticeable difference. The Invati line took the baby hairs he had and toughened them up to be full grown adult hairs like the rest of them. It also cleansed his scalp so that the hairs he did have could grow to their fullest, thickest potential. Now he swears by the Invati product line and he has made a believer out of me to have seen it first-hand.

You do need patience and diligence for the Invati line to work well—it’s not a quick fix. But if you stick with it, I think you’ll see amazing things happen to your hair and your confidence.

A woman can benefit from it too if she wants a fuller head of hair too.

Go ahead and grab the Invati product line for him or her and watch the “miracle grow” right before your eyes.
